If you have ever been to a circus you have seen elephants tethered to a chain that is connected to a stake in the ground. You may not realize that that stake is only eighteen inches long and that elephant can easily pull that stake up, because a grown man has to pull the stake up to free the elephant. Now if a grown man can pull up the stake, why doesn’t the elephant pull that stake out of the ground and free himself? Well, when that elephant was a baby, he did not have the strength to pull that stake out of the ground. After years of trying, the elephant concludes that he can never pull it out of the ground. So in circuses all over...

Today I am starting a new Series on Faith that Works. We will be studying the Book of James and see How Faith Works. We are living in a day and age where the World around us is looking for the Genuine, for the Authentic and for the Real Faith Found In Jesus Christ. I know this series is going to both Encourage and Challenge each and every one of us. I want to get us beyond talking about being a Christ Follower but now living out the life of Jesus everyday. This is the time to step out and be the Authentic, Real Christ Follower the world is looking for. The greatest time to live is now. Background: The Jewish people have been scattered...

Let's talk a little bit about how trouble relates to the Christian life. Bro. Dawson and I were visiting in the home of a young couple the other week. We were talking about the Christian life. I said to them that the Christian life begins with the supernatural birth. You invite the Lord Jesus into your heart and you are instantaneously born into the family of God. But a Christian life continues by growth. God's design, God's purpose for everyone who is saved is that they grow and develop and become the mature, full grown Christian that God intends. One of the ingredients God uses in the process of helping us to grow and...

Now the sea they sailed on was subject to sudden storms that could work havoc. As matter of fact Matthew uses a Greek word to describe an earthquake. Can you imagine the scene for a moment? The little boat had left the safety of the harbor with Jesus and His disciples on board. All was calm as they headed across the lake. But suddenly, out of nowhere it seemed, the boat was caught in the fury of the storm. This is a dramatic picture of the daily life of every Christian. As believers we are on a journey from earth to heaven. Sometimes this journey is calm as things are moving along quite nicely for us; all is calm and all...

Well, tonight, I want us to continue our thoughts about faith, and about what faith is. When we started this series of messages and series of lessons and studies on faith, we said several things about what faith is. And, we gave several principles in that famous message on seven principles on growing faith, on which I had 8 points, but you may not know how that works, but you would just have to be here to know how that works. And, we want to continue that tonight. We want to talk about: Faith is Trusting God. Faith is Trusting God: a very simple, but a very vital concept to a growing faith, and I want us to turn...

We talk readily about trusting Jesus. We sing songs about trusting Jesus. All too often, however, we are unsure about how to apply that slogan to our lives. What does it mean to trust Jesus? Where are we to trust, and where are we to take initiative? What does trusting Jesus really mean? Nationally and within our religious framework we speak rather consistently of sin, guilt, and shame. We may not always use that terminology, but we are consumed with the concept of determining where to point fingers, how to designate responsibility for disasters and tragedies of various kinds. Our insurance companies want to know who is at fault...

Now, this morning I want us to look at a demonstration of faith in the life of Simon Peter. Simon Peter was a lot of things. He was boisterous. He was impetuous -- impulsive. Sometimes he was even profane, but he was never complacent. He was never satisfied with the status quo. As we look at our text, we discover that it is illustrative of the adventuresome spirit and the amazing faith of Simon Peter. After preaching to a great multitude of people, Jesus went up into a mountain to pray. The disciples had been sent out back across the lake. It was somewhere between three o'clock and six o'clock in the morning. One of the sudden...

From cover to cover God's Word consistently contrasts the two pathways of life. Two Paths. Today as men we need to reaffirm our commitment to God's Path. In the New Testament Jesus talked about the ''broad road'' to destruction and the ''narrow pathway'' that leads to life (Mt. 7:13-14). In the Old Testament the description of the two pathways is no less visually graphic. Listen to Proverbs 4:14-19 (NKJV): Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil. 15 Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn away from it and pass on. 16 For they do not sleep unless they have done evil; and their sleep is taken away unless...

From the time we begin to be alert that there are other people in our lives, we begin to develop social relationships, we begin to seek approval and advice of others. We are influenced by our friends, whether they be family or outside the family. Part of our influence happens because of the need for social acceptance. We don't want be different. We want to have the approval of our peer group. We as parents recognize it particularly in the teenage years. What is it that your teens say to you? "Mom everybody is doing it." As a parent we become concerned during the teenage years, that our teens make the right choices of friends...

I want to speak to you today on just two words, '' TRUST GOD!'' Just those two words, with a big exclamation point after them. Trust God! Trust God! Oh, wherever you are and whatever your condition, turn with all your heart's trust unto God and to His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. My text is found in the 12th verse of Psalm 2. ''Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him.'' That Hebrew word translated ''blessed'' is the Hebrew word meaning literally, ''Oh, the blessedness of all those that put their trust in Him.'' Oh, the blessedness! It's an exclamation. The Psalmist contemplates the blessedness of the man that...

This morning the call was ''Look to Jesus'' tonight our scripture resounds with a call to ''Trust in Jesus.'' Why? Because He's worthy of your trust, He is able to change your life, He can forgive your sin, He will give you a home in heaven, because He is able to save your soul. For years we have sung that great hymn, ''Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His word. Just to rest upon His promise, and to know ''THUS SAITH THE LORD.'' As the risk of offending everyone; to trust is Jesus is more than 'sweet'. It is life-affirming, it brings confidence, and it brings security. Just as surely as you can trust a good chair to hold you up...

Indeed, the most important discover we need to make it the discovery of the accuracy and the authenticity of scripture. Because everything we believe, everything we hold true and everything we hold dear is from the Word of God. And as Christians the basis for all authority and all Christian faith and commitment is the teaching of scripture, not the traditions of men. The purpose of this study is to understand what the Bible teaches on these very important subjects. It is things that we happen to believe as Baptists, but this isn't a study on ''Baptist Doctrine.'' This is a study on the Bible and the teachings of scripture. And obviously...

I really do appreciate it. And as I’m going what I wanted to is I wanted to tell you what I’m going to be praying for you. So we choose a church verse every year and its proverbs 3:5 & 6. And what I’m gonna be doing is I’m gonna be praying through that verse for you. So what I’m gonna be doing in the message today, what it is that I’m gonna be praying for you. So if you’re new to our church what I love about this, I love that you are here this weekend, cause you’re gonna see our church verse. Why we choose that, why it’s so important. You’ll understand what I’ll be praying for you. And I think you’ll get some great insights...

May the words of my mouth ... And the meditations of all Our hearts ... Be always acceptable to you --- our strength and Our redeemer amen One of the Scripture commentators I read this week made an interesting point. He said these lessons are perfect for this Sunday .. the 4th of July weekend. I was glad he explained himself because I sure didn't follow that logic!! He explained that every single day we give each other a theological, patriotic, statement .. a statement about God and this country which is drawn from these lessons. Each day we hand each other papers which read: -- ''In God we trust.'' Fascinating thought...

One of the major casualties of the September 11th terrorist attacks was the ability of people to trust. Routines of daily life that once were taken for granted are now sources of major anxiety for some. It will be a long time before many can board an airplane in comfort. Being a large city among tall buildings will be difficult for others. The ability of our government and its institutions to protect us will be questioned. Our ease about being near people we don't know will cause some trepidation. Though we may not like ourselves for it we will now look at those with certain ethnic features and accents with a wary eye. Even the complacency...

Little Johnny was walking down the beach, and he spied a matronly woman sitting under a beach umbrella on the sand. He walked up to her and asked, ''Are you a Christian?''''Yes.'' she replied. ''Do you read your Bible every day?''She nodded her head, ''Yes.''''Do you pray often?'' Little Johnny asked next, and again she answered, ''Yes.''With that he asked his final question, ''Will you hold my quarter while I go swimming?'' APPLY: That little boy believed that ONLY a woman who was a Christian would be trustworthy. He wasn't willing to entrust his quartet with anyone else. Why would that boy believe that? Perhaps it was because...

It is vital that we learn how to live according to God's Word. For the Christian, the Bible is our instruction book for life. The Bible provides our life, hope, truth, joy, comfort, peace, guide, direction, protection, and defense...just to name a few. So we must learn how to live Life By The Book. Indeed, we are learning what that means as we study Psalm 119. Tonight, we come to 119:41-48 as we think about the sermon subject, Trust and Obey. READ TEXT - PRAY When we walk with the Lord, In the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way; While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who...

Last week I mentioned my trek up Springer Mountain to read the plaque at the beginning of the Appalachian Trail. What I didn't tell you was after I got to the top, I wasn't out of the woods yet! I had to get to the parking lot to meet Tami and I followed the trail away from the rock but it diverged into 3 UNMARKED trails. I spent forty-five minutes on wild-goose chases until a family came along from the parking lot that was able to point me in the right direction. Our friend David is not out of the woods yet either. When we last left David he was in the desert wilderness of Ziph hiding from Saul. It was there that he learned to trust in the...
