TITUS SERMON OUTLINES

by Roger Thomas

Introduction: The theme of Titus is found at the beginning and the end. ''Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God's elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness-'' (1:1). ''Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives'' (3:14). These two verses form the book ends that encircle the book. The whole letter is about making the case for this principle-truth leads to godliness. Followers of Jesus must do what is good! No exceptions. Christians do good not just for their own sake, but...

The apostle Paul had a way of being with young people. That's a pretty good way to stay young. I heard about a guy who came huffing and puffing up to a service station one day in an old fliver and he said, ''have you seen a bunch of young people come by in a sport's car.'' Yep, you looking for them? He said uh huh, I'm their leader.'' If you want to stay young you just stay around a group of young people. Well, the apostle Paul had a way with being around young people. Paul had a way of winning a young man to Christ and staying with that young man until he became a mature, dedicated servant of the Lord...

Would you take God's Word this morning please and turn to Titus chapter 2, and in a moment we'll begin reading in verse 11. Before we begin to read, I want to tell you what happened many years ago. There was a young man named John, a boy whose mother died when John was 6 years old. He was orphaned from his mother. His father was a sailor, a sea-faring man. He sailed the Mediterranean. And when John was only 11 he began to sail with his father. He himself became a sailor at the age of 11. He fell in with the wrong crowd, got into such wickedness, such sin, such vileness, such debauchery that his own father disowned him. John sank lower and lower into vileness and sin...

We have gathered as Christ's church this morning, but the church that met as Christ's church nearly 2,000 years ago in New Testament times was a much simpler, informal gathering. There were no ''church buildings'', so homes or public places were used. There were no written materials other than God's Word. No books, no tapes, no videos, no projectors, no parking lots, no auditoriums: just people indwelt by God's Spirit and His Word. When they met they learned why they were there, what they were to share, and how they were to live. In other words they were given what we could call a Mission, a Message, and a Method...

The epistle of Paul to Titus is very, very similar in many ways to his epistle to Timothy-his first epistle to Timothy. And together with the second epistle to Timothy, these three comprise what are called the Pastoral Epistles, having to do with shepherds or leaders. And even though that may not be an entirely correct account of them, still they do relate to the idea of the local church and the establishment of the church. In this case he was with Timothy in the area around Ephesus and Asia Minor, and with Titus on the island of Crete, establishing various areas of leadership in each of the cities. Typically these churches, by the way, just so...

Now join me for a few minutes tonight in the book of Titus! Here we find the Apostle Paul encouraging this young pastor on the island of Crete! Now what Paul said to Titus so long ago, I want to share with you! Look if you will to the third chapter. I want to begin reading in just a minute in verse 3. Now Paul’s about to tell Pastor Titus about the wonderful things God had done in the lives of His children! That after creating man in His own image, after giving mankind everything...man blew it by sinning! But God didn’t stop there! He sent His virgin-born Son to die in the place of sinful man and man still rejected God’s offer. Why...

It is important to know that the epistles of Timothy and Titus are letters that were instructions to pastors on the proper structure of the New Testament church. Some of the instruction involves great emphasis on sound biblical teaching, and on warnings against heresy and false doctrine. Since that is true, then it is the pastor's primary responsibility to expose false teachers and their teachings and the church's responsibility to reject both. In the letters of I and II Timothy, there are clear and distinct warnings to the church which indicate its last days before the coming of the Lord. He was by birth a Gentile. In Galatians...

There are many reasons we give for our existence. There are many objectives we set forth in life as giving our lives meaning and purpose beyond simple existence. Beyond questions of having a reason to live, however, there is always the question of how our lives can contribute to a worthwhile mission. Do we live as though there is a greater purpose to our lives than the simple questions of existence and self-fulfillment? Is there a larger purpose behind our actions, decisions, and way of living? Paul's letter to Titus contains a list of general advice. Much of the advice in chapter two is not very spiritual. We might wonder at that...

Titus was converted at a comparatively early period in Paul's ministry, for he accompanied Paul and Barnabas as part of the delegation from Antioch to Jerusalem (Galatians 2:1-4). His home was Antioch in Syria. He was one of Paul's converts and became a test case in the matter of Gentile freedom from the ceremonial law. On Paul's third missionary journey Titus was sent from Ephesus to Corinth to see what impact the epistle of I Corinthians had made on the church at Corinth (2 Corinthians 2:12-13; 8; 9). He returned to Paul in Macedonia (Acts 20:2; 2 Corinthians 7:5) and was sent back bearing 2 Corinthians. From...

Now any of you who have little kids or have had little kids, you know that little kids are a lot of fun. And the thing is about little kids, as I remember back and now with my granddaughter, Emmy, they're so fun. But when they come over, they can make a mess. Have you noticed that about little kids? There's just something about them. You know, they want to get out all the toys, and their toys have lots of pieces, and it just goes everywhere. Well, when my kids were little, Debbie would want to go out and be like, ''Hey, I want to go shopping with my friends.'' And it's like, ''That's fine. You've just got to take the kids.'' There came...

When I was a student at the Cincinnati Bible Seminary, one week each year was set aside for a World's Missions Conference. Several missionaries were brought to campus each fall and the men who take turns preaching in chapel. Their wives came to class and we learned what it was like to live and work on foreign soil in different cultures. One of the more inspiring missionaries was LaVerne Morse. LaVerne was the third son of J. Russell Morse who founded Asia Christian Services in 1921. Morse began his work with the Lisu Tribe where China, Tibet, Burma and India intersected. Today, his grandson, Mark, is a...

Please open to Titus 2, where we find the marching orders for all men in Christ's church. This chapter lays out God's expectations for all men young and old, as well as we already have seen, for all women young and old. We have come to the fourth quality of grace-energized men that the Spirit of God moves Paul to record in this letter to Titus. Paul tells him that men who are energized by His grace, are characterized by what God calls ''soundness in faith''. This sound faith or literally as the word hugaino means, ''healthy faith'' is a most precious commodity in a believers life. Sound [1] is from the same word used in v.1 for...

There was a man named John Newton who was an English preacher in the 1700's. He preached many sermons, but probably you do not know of any of those sermons. He also wrote several books, but probably if I named the titles of those books, you would not be familiar with them. But John Newton was also a hymn writer and along the way he wrote a hymn which goes like this, ''Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind but now I see.'' It may well be that John Newton drew his inspiration for that great hymn from the very passage of scripture that we...

As we join others in honoring our mothers today . . . I invite you to take God's Word and turn please to the little New Testament book of Titus. It's found right after 1st and 2nd Timothy. I want to say to all of the women today that God has a special ministry just for you! And He wants every women to discover that special ministry and then to develop that special ministry and then deploy that special ministry. Now you may think that having a Women's Ministry is something new. But you're going to learn this morning that the church on the island of Crete .. Pastored by Brother Titus . . . may be the first to have organized a...

1. What I call the sweetest word in the Bible is a word that is used over 150 times in the New Testament. Yet, it is a word that Jesus never used. Now you may think that is strange, but the reason Jesus never used the word was because He didn't have to. He was a walking definition of this word. 2. This word was not spoken by his lips, but it was seen in his life. This subject may never have been mentioned in his lectures, but it was manifested in his living. 3. The word that, to me, is the sweetest word in the Bible is the word grace. If God had a dictionary I believe beside the word grace you would find a one-word definition - Jesus. I think if...

The Bible teaches us that the story of God’s grace is amazing. Why? It is the saving grace of God that breaks the penalty of sin, power of sin, and eternally the presence of sin as we will abide with the Lord forever. The amazing grace of the Lord Jesus Christ that brings salvation to our lives as sinners also brings transformation into our lives making us more like the Savior! I. IT IS THE STORY OF A GREAT SAVIOR - (Line 1) A. Great in His Graciousness - Grand Titus 2:11a 1. Titus was a man whose life had been changed by God’s grace - everyone is in need of “saving grace.” 2. Titus had heard of the amazing grace of the Lord...

The popular author Robert Fulghum once wrote in the Kansas City Times, ''Most of what I really need to know about life… I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but it WAS always taught in the sandbox at nursery school. These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Don't hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don't take things that aren't yours. Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody . . . When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.'' APPLY: Can't get much simpler than that, can you? If...

Before I begin, I want to take a moment and compliment your Pastor Search Committee. A huge word of appreciation to Russ Alford, Lee Evans, Mike Fowler, Jack Nash, Lee Peacock, Barbara Raines and Patsy Randall. This committee has been extremely thorough, incredibly respectful and has represented your church with the utmost class and dignity and I want you to express your appreciation to them. Today, I am preaching a message that you would hear in a normal service on a normal Sunday at my church. I'm not pulling out a ''sugar stick.'' This is the sermon that I preached last Sunday evening as our...
