THE GREAT COMMISSION SERMON OUTLINES

by J. Gerald Harris

In our text for this morning we find the Lord's strategy for world evangelism. He told his disciples that they were to begin in Jerusalem, and then to venture out into Judea, and then to move into Samaria, and ultimately spread the gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth. If you carefully study the Acts of the Apostles you will conclude that this strategy of world evangelization was carried out in exactly the order prescribed here. They started in Jerusalem and we read about it in Acts chapter two. There were 12 disciples of the Lord gathered in the upper room. They had been instructed to tarry in Jerusalem until they were...

Jesus Christ, the resurrected Lord, made numerous appearances to His beloved followers in the forty days following His miraculous bodily resurrection. As He does for us through His word He encouraged them. Promises were made to them and to us. It was a time of equipping and motivating. The fact of the resurrection itself is reassuring to all believers. Thereby followers of Christ are given assurance of life beyond the grave, an eternal home, and the gilded edge promise of His abiding presence with us daily. The consolations consequenting from the resurrection are numerous. As He gave the Eleven the gift of His...

What is the Great Commission? The Great Commission is spelled out for us here in Mark 16:15. The Lord told the disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Keep in mind, this command is not just for the 12 disciples, but it is for all disciples. The word disciple simply means; one who follows another. All of God's people are His disciples. It takes more that 12 people to evangelize the world. So, then, that means that I am a disciple, you are a disciple, the person sitting next to you is a disciple, and the same is true with believers in every part of the world. 2. When we become Christians, we become...

I am preaching from a text that is well-worn but not out-worn. Although it was given over 2,000 years ago, it has not yet been exhausted in its content and applications. It is true that this sermon has been preached thousands of times. However, I cannot say what needs to be said without saying what has already been said. The purpose of this message is not to break new ground. The purpose is to cultivate more intensively some old ground. I am not speaking of a new doctrine, but trying hard to whet your appetites on an old doctrine. The genius of the whole missionary enterprise is that God's Word must go out and that...

It was on the original high and Holy Mount Zion of Heaven that a problem was recognized. Man, created in God's image, to reflect His glory had fallen for a lie. He had believed the word of that Ancient Serpent Satan and his innocence was lost, he had been seduced, he stood in allegiance with Satan and his myriad of demons in rebellion against their Creator. Within the heart of God there was a near insurmountable conflict. God being Holy could not allow man back into His presence AND God being Love could not leave man without hope. So He determined to save, rescue, redeem a number of from the ranks of...

One of my favorites books and one of the greatest books ever written in the history of Christianity is a book entitled Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. It is a classic. It is an allegory which Bunyan wrote about the Christian life, depicting the journey of the Christian from the cross where the burden of sin is lifted all the way to heaven, the Celestial city, and the difficulties and obstacles that Christian encounters along the way. Along the way, Christian goes to Vanity Fair and it talks about the battle of worldliness that the Christian faces. He goes through the Slough of Despond and talks about the depressions and...

I am absolutely convinced after having lived a half century there is nothing more powerful than a vision. Every great institution, every great invention, every great innovation known to the human race has been the result of somebody’s vision. This past month we have asked you to envision a church filled with followers of Christ, who give everything they have and everything they are to doing three things 24/7: love God, serve others, share their story. It all begins with loving God. We have learned that is the great commandment. Everything we do ought to flow from a love for God. We believe if you love God you will serve others and...

Presidential Address Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma It has been said of the church, and most critically, I might add: Outwardly splendid as of old; inwardly sparkless, void and cold; her force and fire all spent and gone; like the dead moon, she still shines on. The church of the Lord Jesus Christ is not simply a reflection of greater days of dedication in the past. It is not a cut flower with a little bit of beauty for a moment, but soon to lose its fragrance because it has lost its power and dedication. I believe the greatest days of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ are ahead of us. However, that is only going to be true when we have...

Now we are going to discover some principles in the early church pattern of evangelism. The church is growing at a fantastic rate in the matter of days and weeks it is in the thousands. And all of this because of fantastic vital type of evangelism. It was the church reaching the world and it wasn't easy being a Christian. It wasn't just jump on the band wagon type of thing either. The price was extremely high. And the demands were extreme. And dedication was essential on a total bases. But many people were counting the cost and believing and coming to the Lord Jesus Christ even at a high price. The Holy Spirit in the book of Acts never...

Did you know that in God's economy, on God's team, there are a lot of chicken fryers? There are a lot of people who have been genuinely saved, and they're on the team, and they're suited up, but they're not making a difference. They're not really focused in on the goal. And they don't even really know what that is. They're just wanting the chicken. And they just say, "Well, I just want to be on the team cause I want to go to heaven, but I don't want to do anything that would make a contribution to the team." And they don't really know what they would do anyway. Lots of people don't know why we're here. I had a guy ask...

What is the church's main business? What is the church here for? What are we doing in downtown Jacksonville? Why have we, for all of these years, been a church located in downtown? This Scripture is after the resurrection of Jesus. He is getting ready to go back to heaven. (Matthew 28:16- 20) Any organization, institution, or business justifies its existence only in so far as it carries out the purpose for which it was founded. This is certainly true in every area of life. A grocery store justifies its existence if it continues to make groceries available to people. If you walked into a grocery store and said, ''I would like to buy a dozen...

In James Joyce's book ''Finnegan's Wake'' the protagonist raises a toast to his friend Mark saying ''Three quarks for Muster Mark'' a ''quark'' being the cry of a sea gull. I was reminded of this line twice in my professional education. The first time took place in the 1970's when taking a third year graduate physics class titled ''Elementary Particle Physics'' an understatement if there ever was one. In that class we were taught that physicist Murray Gell-Mann borrowed the word quark from Joyce's book to name an important subatomic particle. Until the mid-20th century, scientists thought that protons and neutrons were...

One of the more difficult things for Christians to do is to witness for Christ, to do the work of evangelism. For many Christians they just ignore this command! The call of Jesus for us to witness to others was never a suggestion, it was a command! Many things hinder us in this area, mostly fear! Often we are afraid of what others will think, or worse, that it won't make any difference if we do share our faith! God clearly states however that He will be with us in evangelism! Yet even when we know He is there we still are not sure about it! ILLUS: LIKE THE MAN WHO WAS WALKING ALONG A NARROW PATH NOT...

Crazy Robert Hayward…helping me along in my faith and work. Teaching me about grace along the way. ''Take them out into the deep water and drown them in love'' What does it mean to be a Disciple? - What does it mean to be a Christian? God Sin Jesus Christ Faith - A disciple is someone who wants to follow Jesus and learn and live his teachings. - They want to know about their teacher and BE LIKE their teacher - Being a disciple goes beyond INTELLECTUAL knowledge and moves towards conforming your life to the teacher's life. - Look at John 13:12-17 - Jesus is TEACHER and LORD (Knowledge and...

It was game day, Saturday November 5th 2011, and UT freshman Derrick Brodus was laid back on the couch at his fraternity getting ready to watch his beloved Tennessee Volunteers play that evening. Less than an hour before kickoff Derrick fumbled around as he tried to answer his cell phone. After answering his phone, he received the shock of his life. The voice on the other end told him the head coach was sending a police escort to pick him up and rush him to the game. Just minutes before the call, Tennessee's backup kicker pulled a muscle during warmups. The starting kicker was already out from an injury earlier in the...

Charles Paul Conn tells of the time when he lived in Atlanta. He noticed in the Yellow Pages, in the listing of restaurants, an entry for a place called Church of God Grill. The peculiar name aroused his curiosity and he dialed the number. A man answered with a cheery, "Hello! Church of God Grill!" He asked how the restaurant had been given such an unusual name, and the man at the other end said: "Well, we had a little mission down here, and we started selling chicken dinners after church on Sunday to help pay the bills. Well, people liked the chicken, and we did such a good business, that eventually we cut back on the...
