The Foundation of the Family (6 of 11)
by Jeff Ginn
It's going to fall. The Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy is going to fall. Scientists travel yearly to measure the building's slow descent. They report that the 179-foot tower moves about one-twentieth of an inch a year, and is now 17 feet out of plumb. They further estimate that by the year 2007 the 810-year old tower will have leaned too far and will collapse onto the nearby ristorante, where scientists now gather to discuss their findings. Quite significantly, the word ''pisa'' means ''marshy land,'' which gives some clue as to why the tower began to lean even before it was completed. Also--its foundation is only 10 feet deep! If the...
Pivot Point (5 of 10)
by Robert Dawson
How many of you ever played on a see-saw as a child? How many of you ever tried to walk from one end to the other without falling off? As you make your way to the middle you reach a point (Pivot point or fulcrum) where everything was centered and leveled off but as you continued the see saw began to tip. Well today, as we continue looking at Life's Blueprints through a study of the 10 commandments we find ourselves at a pivot-point. I say that not intimating that what we look at today is more or less important than what we have looked at before or will look at in weeks to come. I am using that term to denote this is the point in our...
Family First, the Commandment with a Promise (5 of 10)
by Joe Alain
The fifth message in a series of ten sermons on the Ten Commandments. ''Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.'' Exodus 20:12, ESV ''Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 'Honor your father and mother' (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 'that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.''' Ephesians 6:1-3, ESV The fifth commandment is the centerpiece of the Ten Commandments. The first four deal with our relationship with God, the vertical dimension. The other six with our relationship to each other, the horizontal dimension...
Honor Graduate (5 of 10)
by James Merritt
To be an honor graduate is considered quite an accomplishment. These honors, as you know, are in Latin and they are used to indicate the level of academic distinction with which an academic degree is earned. There are typically three types of Latin honors in order of increasing level of honor. They are: Cum Laude (with honor), Magna Cum Laude (with great honor) and Summa Cum Laude (with highest honor). One of my goals when I went to college was to be an honor graduate. I didn't want to get an ordinary degree. I wanted a degree that signified I had graduated with a distinction of being a good student. There is another type...
Help for Hurting Parents (5 of 10)
by Stan Coffey
We are talking about ''Timeless Values For Today's Family''. Things change but God doesn't, amen? God's Word never changes and what God said in the Ten Commandments so long ago still is valid today for our families. God gave us a foundation on which to build the three institutions that God founded, the institution of the home, the institution of the government, and the institution of the church. All of these are built on the same principles if they are to be built successfully. And today we are living in a time that people have gotten away from these values. Many children who are growing up now are not growing up with the same values...
Making Peace with Your Parents (5 of 10)
by Eric McQuitty
''A society that destroys the family destroys itself'' (Joy Davidman). Introduction: What shall we do with imperfect parents? Honor them! One of the bitterest pills grown children have to swallow is the realization is that their parents are not perfect. When you were born, your mom and dad were the center of your universe--the source of your security, the object of your love. But as you grew, that idyllic scenario cracked as you found the fault lines in their lives. Maybe you first suspected your parents' imperfection by things they said. Did they ever tell you that if you played with matches, you'd wet the bed? Or that if you...
I Love You Mom And Dad (6 of 11)
by Ken Trivette
A mother that had scrimped and saved to put her son through college sat in her son's graduation. She watched as he walked across the platform and received his degree with honors. As he walked down the isle, instead of turning into the designated row, he kept walking; down to where his mother sat. The young man threw his arms around her neck, kissed her on the cheek, and as he placed his diploma in her hands, he said, ''Here, Mother, you earned it!'' The fifth commandment addresses that which many parents have earned. Honor! ''Honor thy father and thy mother.'' The fifth commandment begins the second section...
The Longing of Parents (4 of 9)
by Doug Tegner
Today, trend of 'blaming parents' for our quarks, vices and problems. We have given ourselves permission to see ourselves as victims for our uncontrollable anger, insecurity and our distasteful personal habits. Celebrities reveal that their parents abused them when they were kids ...alcoholism, repressed sexuality and overeating all do to their parents. TV, parents are mostly caricatured as incompetent buffoons. That is why this 5th of the 10 has much to say to us today. EX 20: 12 Honor your father and mother To some, these things will be easy to hear and respond to. You have the highest regard for your parents. To others, you...
Dads, Moms, and Kids (5 of 9)
by Ernest Easley
We are learning these days from Exodus 20: God's Guidelines for Building a Godly Home! More important than building a business, building a career, building a nest egg is building Godly Homes! You may become the President of the largest company in this city and have great power and influence, but if you've not pointed your children to Jesus Christ, you've not succeeded. But on the other hand, you may never become a big success in the world's eyes, you may never accumulate a mass fortune, but if you've pointed your children to Jesus Christ and built a godly home, you are successful! I would rather fail as a...
Honor Your Parents
by Dr. Ed Young
Once upon a time there was a little old man. This little man was compeled to live with his son and his son's wife and their family. He would blink a lot. He trembled involuntarily. And while eating at the table as often as not, he would, to put food to his mouth, he would miss his mouth and food would go back on the table. And after every meal when his daughter- in-law would remove the plate, there would be just food and all around on the tablecloth as if a child had eaten. Finally one day he was eating there and he spilled an unusual amount of food, and the daughter-in-law said, "I can't stand this any longer. To just eat every day like this in filth...
Honoring Father and Mother
by Adrian Rogers
Be finding the book of Exodus please. Chapter twenty. That brings us to that wonderful passage that we know as the Ten Commandments. Exodus chapter twenty. We're talking on this subject, ''Treasuring Family Values.'' Somebody has said that a cynic is somebody who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. We live in a cynical age and there are those, many of them who do not know family values and certainly they do not treasure family values. I think you'd have to agree with me that there has been an all-out assault on the home and Satan has masterminded it because the home is the basic unit of society. As we said before...
Honor Thy Parents
by Stan Coffey
Praise God. Amen. Praise the Lord. What a great time we've had in the Lord today. I thank Him for the way He has blessed our church with so much talent and with such willing people - the orchestra, the choir and all the praise team. Everyone did such a good job making this a special Mother's Day. You know, in our church we want to reach everybody with the gospel - the young, the old, rich, poor, saved, lost. That's why we do different kinds of music so don't miss a Sunday because on the Sunday you miss we're going to be doing your kind. It won't be the same every week. It's going to be different. Just be patient with...
Honor Parents (4 of 8)
by Eddie Snipes
Honor Thy Father and Mother. This commandment is fairly self-explanatory but there is a lot to learn about this command to honor and the Bible has much to say on this topic. Let's look at the command God gave to the children of Israel in Deuteronomy 5: 16 ' Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you. There are three areas that the Bible addresses in detail concerning honor. In our modern generation the concept...
Fulfilling The Fifth Commandment
by Jimmy Evans
HONORING OUR PARENTS IS A LIFE LONG COMMAND AS CHILDREN - honor by obedience. AS ADULT, honor by respect, commitment and care II. IT IS A UNIVERSAL COMMANDMENT - (vs. conditional commandment) In God's sight, there is no parent who deserves dishonor. (It is for everyone) It is riot saying every parent isn't honorable. only that we are not responsible for their actions, only ours.COMMON REASONS FOR A LACK OF PARENTAL HONOR 1 Busy and Mis-prioritized life - They take what we have left to give. 2. Unforgiveness/ Judgmentalism - We are withholding honor...
