SERVANTHOOD SERMON OUTLINES

by Jerry Vines

Chapter 52, verse 13, says, ''Behold, my servant.'' This is one of a series of servant songs, which God revealed to Isaiah. We briefly talked about the matter of these servant songs last Wednesday night in our study and pointed out the fact that ultimately all of these servant songs find their fulfillment in the Lord Jesus Christ. That's certainly the way the New Testament views it. There are many New Testament passages which refer these servant songs of Isaiah to the Lord Jesus Christ. What Isaiah is writing here was ultimately fulfilled in the life and work of Jesus. Keep in mind that he was writing 700 years before Jesus came into....

INTRODUCTION: Mark's gospel, the shortest one, has as its purpose to present the Lord Jesus as the suffering servant. The key verse is Mark l10:45, ''For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.'' Mark's view of the Lord Jesus as a suffering servant accounts for the absence of many of Jesus' teachings in his gospel. It was not so much Jesus' words as His works that Mark emphasizes. Mark's gospel is a gospel of action, we see Jesus on the move. He heals first in one city and then in another. He moves rapidly from place to place. In Mark two words recur in the King...

Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy's, who died a few years, became a familiar sight to millions in his company's television commercials. I used to refer to him as Uncle Dave. He wasn't my uncle, but I hoped that if he ever heard about my referring to him that way he might remember me in his will. He didn't. I guess I can just call him plain old Dave Thomas now. Dave also appeared in a lot of in store training films. In those, as in many of the more familiar commercials, he would dress as his workers. One year he appeared on the cover of one of the company's annual reports dressed in a knee-length work apron holding a mop...

I read about a woman who telephoned a friend and asked how she was feeling. ''Terrible,'' came the reply ''my head's splitting and my back and legs are killing me. The house is a mess, and the kids are simply driving me crazy.'' The caller said, ''Listen, go and lie down, I'll come over right away and cook lunch for you, clean up the house, and take care of the children while you get some rest. And then I'll fix dinner for Sam when he gets home from work.'' ''Sam?'' the complaining housewife grasped. ''My husband's not Sam.'' ''Oh dear me, I must have dialed the wrong number.'' exclaimed the first womanThere was a long pause. ''Does that...

This morning we are given an opportunity by God to be great in His sight. Open with me to Matthew 20:25-28: But Jesus called them to Himself and said, ''You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. 27 And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave-- 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.'' NKJV Now turn over to Matthew 23:10-12: And do not be called teachers; for One...

INTRODUCTION: In his discourse with the disciples, Jesus speaks to them in a parable. In the first part of the chapter they had questioned Him concerning the coming destruction of the temple, the sign of His return and the end of the world. In (vv. 4-44) He details the events of the Tribulation period, a time so severe that in (vs. 22), He states, ''Except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved...'' However, in (vv. 45-51), He turns their attention from coming judgment on the earth to an entirely different subject, that of faithful stewardship: ''Who then is a faithful and wise servant?'' In other words, ''In light of...

DEVELOPING A SERVANT'S SPIRIT MEANS: ADOPTING A NEW STANDARD Note: Jesus is to become our new standard for life. We are to live and serve as He did. Jn. 13:14-15 ''Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.'' (15) ''I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.'' A.I Want To Suggest 10 New Standards Or Attitudes That Must Be Adopted As You Develop A Servant's Spirit.1. A servant is willing to suffer injustice without seeking retaliation. (a) Jesus was our perfect model of how to live out of a servant's spirit. 1 Pet. 2:21-23 ''To this you...

INTRO: There is no doubt about God's call on our lives for service. To be a Christian brings a certain level of responsibility to serve. What is this call to service? What is it that God is asking from us? What are the expectations of servanthood? Sometimes our focus as Christians can become misplaced while it is vitally important that we keep our eyes on Jesus there are other issues of servanthood that go along with that focus on Christ. It is not enough that we are concerned for our own salvation, God's call is twofold: that we get saved, and that we reach the lost! ILLUS: D.L. MOODY ONCE TOLD THIS STORY ABOUT A PAINTING...

Introduction: Jesus had a great synonym for greatness - servant. In Mark 10:43-45 he said, ''Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not to be served.'' When you responded to God's vision for your life, seeking to fulfill the call that He burned in your heart, servant-leadership is probably not what you envisioned. Like Elisha, we look to serve the prophet of the Lord, only to find that we spend the next twenty years pouring water on his hands and ministering in menial tasks. But servant-leadership is the...

Hillary Clinton died and went to heaven. As she stood in front of Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates, she saw a huge wall of clocks behind him. She asked, ''What are all those clocks?''Saint Peter answered, ''Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock. Every time you lie, the hands on your clock will move. ''Oh,'' said Hillary, ''whose clock is that?'' ''That's Mother Teresa's. The hands have never moved indicating that she never told a lie.'' ''Whose clock is that?'' ''That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have only moved twice telling us that Abe only told 2 lies in his entire life.''''Where's Bill's clock?'' Hillary asked. ''Bill's clock is...

I remember dating Kristal - barely. It's not that our dating relationship was not memorable or special but it was just brief. There was not a lot of dating that took place. Most of our time was spent apart - she lived in Atlanta and I lived here in Valdosta. We went on our first date the very first weekend of November in 1995. By the end of January the following year, just three months later, I asked her to marry me - remarkably she said yes - I didn't even have a ring to give her. As a matter of fact - we had a date set - if my memory serves me correctly - she had a dress before she had a ring. I didn't have the money for a nice ring. I did not want to...

Jesus knew the importance to servanthood - serving others! 7. ''You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.'' 12 ''Do you understand what I have done for you?'' he asked them. 13 ''You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. There are some important truths that are never realized in your life if you do not participate with this principal. The lessons of servanthood cannot be learned through head knowledge they...

After the Olympics, glory seems to be on my mind. All the athletes strive for glory by winning a gold, silver or bronze medal. The best athletic performance in the world makes these winners role models in their home countries, it makes them wealthy through advertising endorsements and it makes them celebrities in everyone's eyes. We tune in the television to see swimmers cutting through the water effortlessly or we watch as the winners are awarded their medals literally in a moment of glory. What we don't see behind that smiling face on the winner's stand is the twenty years of daily 5:30 AM swimming workouts, the bone tired fatigue...

In 1 Tim 4:6-16, the apostle Paul lists the qualifications of an excellent servant of Jesus Christ. The key phrase appears in v. 6: "Thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ." In a sense, it is the underlying theme of the whole epistle, which was written to instruct Timothy on how to minister to the church a Ephesus. (READ) The Greek word translated "good" could better be translated "noble," "admirable," or "excellent." It was used in 1 Tim. 3:1 to speak of the work of ministry, land here it is used to identify the kind of man God wants in ministry. "Minister" is the translation of the Greek word diakonos from which we get the English word...

If you have your Bible, turn to 2nd Timothy chapter 2. You know, there's a special name for 2nd Timothy and for 1st Timothy and for Titus. Those three letters that Paul wrote, two to Timothy, one to Titus, they're called the Pastoral Epistles. They were written from Paul, the great apostle, to younger guys, who were pastors of churches. So we learn from these. But we also know that there are certain messages that are just kind of tailored. Paul is telling them how to pastor. He's teaching them how to do it. And I'm glad that he did, because it's a help to pastors. It's a help to me. Becoming a pastor and being a pastor it may look easy but it's...

Today I am continuing our Series Our House. We will be talking about a few of the core values of Our Church House. Every House has a Culture, what is acceptable and not acceptable in the house. Today I want to begin in talking about Our House - Mission What do you think of when I say Mission? For some of us we think of Tom Cruz and Mission Impossible. If you choose to accept this Mission…Some think of the military and their ongoing Missions. Some may think of the Missions that the Catholics established throughout California when they came over from Spain. Mission: a permanent diplomatic establishment abroad; embassy...

Intro: I had a wreck on Wednesday night. Not a car wreck or anything like that. It happened in our Community Group. We are doing a study on the gospel centered life. We were discussing how we need to have a correct awareness of God's holiness and our sinfulness, and when we do it makes the cross much bigger. As we were discussing, a woman in our group who is a school counselor for Chesterfield County asked the question, ''Is it ok to be proud of your achievements? Is it good to build up a child's self esteem?Eeeeeerrrrchhhh, crash!!!! Two very opposite world views collided and crashed right there in our family room.One...

1. As we continue looking at the Know Ye Not's of the New Testament, I want us to look at the second that is found in Romans 6. In our last study we looked at Romans 6:3 where Paul asks, "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?" Paul asks once again in Romans 6, "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?"2. As we shall see, Paul tells us that we are all slaves. The word "servants" literally means "bondman" and refers to being a slave voluntary or...

OPEN: James Dobson tells of the time he was away on a business trip. While he was away, and his wife and 2 children were sitting down to eat, his wife turned to their two year old son Ryan and asked if he would like to pray before he and sister ate. The invitation startled the little boy, but he folded his little hands, bowed his head and said reverently, "I love you Daddy, Amen." (James Dobson, Focus On The Family Magazine April 07 p. 18) APPLY: Now, who was little Ryan praying to? (His earthly daddy) Why? Because, in his child-like mind - his earthly father WAS God. His earthly father was most powerful being he knew. Granted...
