When Samson Brought the House Down (17 of 17)
by Ken Trivette
1. We have now come to the closing scene in the life of Samson and the end of our studies of his life. Our study has been a series of up's and down's. As I have said in the past, his is a life of bright spots and dark blots. Unfortunately, there have been more dark blots than bright spots. In Judges 16:31 it is stated that Samson ''judged Israel for twenty years'' (cp. 15:20). The Scripture does not disclose all his acts during those twenty-years, so perhaps there are more bright spots. It would seem that the record God has given us of his life is to provide more lessons from his failures than his successes. If this is the case, there is certainly...
Samson: Superboy (1 of 3)
by Jerry Vines
These next three messages are going to be about one of the most enigmatic characters in all of the Bible - SAMSON. We'll begin in the 13th chapter of Judges. I especially want our young people to come and hear these messages - good for everybody - but special application to young people. So, get your antennas up and listen to these messages. I want to call you attention to verse 1 because it sets the stage for the career of the man known in the Bible as Samson. ''The children of Israel did again evil in the sight of the Lord.'' The same weary pattern occurs. It's like a stuck needle. It just comes again and again as we move through the...
Samson
by Miles Seaborn
INTRO. A story of tragedy because of what God raised him up to be and what he could have been. God's people in bondage (v. 1) They did evil ''again'' in the sight of the Lord. God raised up a deliverer (v. 3-5) He came from the commitment of purity. ''No strong drink, no unclean food (of parents and of child) God raised up his will out of this kind of background then and now! God received the glory - They sought to honor the messenger (v. 15) but instead the angel of the Lord called for an offering to the Lord (v. 16). God fulfilled his promise out of bareness - a barren nation, a barren womb. Yet God caused it to be! (But God - Book...
Samson and Delilah
by Tony Nester
One of the best things Evelyn and I discovered when we moved from New Jersey to Iowa was ''open houses'' for high school graduates. We didn't have those when we graduated from our high schools back East. Up go the displays of school pictures, ribbons, trophies and awards. Out comes the food. And if you look into the eyes of the parents you can sense a mixture of pride, relief, joy, and hope and a touch of anxiety about what's to come. One of the famous stories in the Bible about young people and their potential is the story of Samson and Delilah. Samson's story starts in Chapter 13 in the Book of Judges and Delilah comes in at the...
Backslider: Samson
by Jesse Hendley
As we study the men who walked with God and yet backslid, we look now at the life of Samson. A backslider is one who has walked with God, has had communion with Him, has had His blessing upon his life, but then drifts and lets sin come in to separate him from communion with God. Someone has said that every sin you commit, after your conversion, will mean that much less glory in Heaven! I think that's right, friends. God has some solemn warnings about backsliding in His Holy Book. Now in the Book of Judges, we read that Samson was a Nazarite from his mother's womb. He was filled with the Spirit of God. He did many mighty...
Flee the Lusts of the Flesh - Remember Samson (29 of 29)
by John Barnett
Our God is jealous and He is Holy. The sins He hated in the Old Testament, He hates in the New Testament. What would offend someone who loved us so much that He wants us to be utterly loyal to Him? We become an enemy of God when we become friendly with the world. And what is friendship with the world again? As for the lusts of the flesh "Lust of flesh" is being tempted by our flesh to chase pleasures, this equals the cravings of the body. These are all of the sensual temptations. This is lust for another person. The desire to have and enjoy the body of an individual, either mentally or physically, even though such pleasure...
Samson: A Restored Faith
by Jim Henry
Hebrews 11:32; Judges 16 Again, we look at the story of Samson, whose life we've been exploring in several segments, realizing that he, like all who live in the world, are challenged by sin. And yet, by God's grace, even at the very end of his life he was enabled to be called a Hero of the Faith. Let's look at the awful tragedy which preceded that marvelous touch of grace. In Hebrews 11:32 we read about the heroes of faith, and Samson was included. It's hard to understand, but I think as we study Judges, chapter 16, it will become more clear to us.Sometime ago, while preaching a series of messages on the family, I was reading a...
Samson and His Strength
by J. Gerald Harris
Now, when I think of Samson, I think of someone who is big; I think of someone who is strong; I think of someone whose very presence is intimidating. I'm reminded of a story from the wild west. A small, sickly looking guy was hired as a bartender. The saloon owner gave him a word of warning. ''Drop everything and run for your life if ever you hear that Big John is coming to town.''The man worked several months without any problem. Then one day a cowboy rushed into the saloon shouting, ''Big John is a'comin'.''He was in such a hurry to leave, he knocked the small bartender to the floor on his way out. Before the bartender could...
Living for God in Crisis Times: Samson, It's Too Soon to Quit
by Randal Ross
Intro: There are lots of ways that we differ this morning. But there are some things that we all share in common. We all feel like quitting at times! A. We come here from many different backgrounds and experiences. 1. We are different physically, color, age 2. But we do share some things and those are the things that bind us together. Family. B. One thing we share is that all feel like quitting. And we all feel like failures. 1. Everyone here has thought about quitting some time in their life. Many have felt like quitting recently. 2. USA Today: During these next two months 35 million American adults are depressed and want to quit, to run away...
Samson: A Study in Separation
by Nelson Price
JESUS CHRIST exhorted His followers of every generation to ''Go... into all the world.'' Yet, both the Old and New Testaments exhort God's people to ''Come out from among the'' (II Cor. 6:17). The coming out preseeds the going forth in order to be equipped. The separation must preseed the sending. John, the beloved, saidn, ''Do not love the world, nor the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him'' (I John 2:5). James said, ''Don't you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world constitutes himself an enemy of God'' (James 4:4). Some...
Samson: Playboy (2 of 3)
by Jerry Vines
In my mind Samson had the greatest potential of any Old Testament character. Samson had everything going for him. He had a unique conception - a godly mother and father who had prayed for him - a conception that was brought about in prayer. He had a unique childhood. Because the child grew and the Lord blessed him as the Bible says. Samson was a man who had true charisma in the sense that the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon his life from time to time. He had every opportunity to become indeed a great man for God. We look at these early years and he was a superboy and we expect him to grow up to...
How to Keep From Self-Destructing (10 of 10)
by Jeff Lynn
This morning we are concluding not only this two-part message on the destruction of Samson, but the conclusion of this entire series. As I mentioned last week, it may be that you are someone who is being used by God, but you have this besetting sin or an Achilles' heel that keeps dogging you or leading you to destruction. Or, it could be that you WANT to be used by God in a significant way, but you have destructive tendencies. We've probably all known people who had so much to offer, and seemingly everything going for them, only to have it wasted because of their destructive behavior. Samson was a prime example of...
You Never Miss the Water Till the Well Runs Dry
by Ernest Easley
There's an old saying that's true: You Never Miss the Water Till the Well Runs Dry. There's so much we take for granted: our health .. those we love ... God's blessing on our life and on our church! You Never Miss the Water Till the Well Runs Dry! That's also true spiritually! In fact ... in Judges16 .. Samson lost the power of God in his life and he didn't even know it. Look if you will to Judges 16 for ...You Never Miss the Water Till the Well Runs Dry Judges 16.20-22 Now look back to verse 20b, "But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him." Do you see the word "departed?" It literally means "to turn off ... to turn aside." In...
The Besetting Sin (15 of 17)
by Ken Trivette
1. The last couple of scenes we have considered in Samson's life have been encouraging, especially after there had been so much disappointment. But, our hope is short-lived for as we enter Judges Chapter sixteen, we find him falling back into the same sins that had so disappointed us in earlier studies. You could say that it is the same song, second stanza, and still off key. 2. As we have often been reminded in our study on Samson, his life is an example of what could have been. Having been chosen of God and appointed to be a deliverer of the children of Israel, equipped and empowered with an unusual power to...
Superman and His Kryptonite (3 of 3)
by Jeff Strite
OPEN: My wife and I have always enjoyed doing jig saw puzzles. We'll put them out on a folding table and work on it for days, enjoying the experience as we successfully put in piece after piece. I recently ran across another person's experience with a jig saw puzzle. She wrote: "After toiling over a 1000 piece puzzle, I was unable to finish it because there was one piece missing. I returned the box to the store and explained why. The clerk was obviously not a puzzle aficionado. As she refunded my money, she asked pleasantly, 'How far did you get before you realized that there was a piece missing?'" APPLY: When do you realize a...
