WELCOME: If you are just joining us, we are at the end of a 4-week series on the book of Psalms called Question Everything, in which we're seeing how an ancient collection of songs engages some of our most pressing questions today. Week 1: Can I be Happy? Week 2: Is Something Wrong with Me? Week 3: Will Life Ever Get Better? WEEK 4: ''Does God have a purpose for my life?'' I want you to think about this question very personally-not, ''Does God have a purpose for the world?'' But does God have a purpose for you, specifically... for your life, and how can you know what it is? Few things in life are as important as finding your...

We have been talking about how to be a spiritual champion like the Lord Jesus Christ and the victory we have with Him. This is our eighth message in this series called God's Olympics. We have been talking about how to go for the spiritual gold, how to be a spiritual champion. When all the sports, professional, collegiate, and high school athletes are taking the center stage, we are all aware of what it takes to be the best, what it takes to be a spiritual champion. And today we are going to talk about that; you must be committed to your purpose. Today's message is entitled ''The Purpose of a Spiritual Champion.'' Romans 12:1-2 ''Therefore...

There are many reasons we give for our existence. There are many objectives we set forth in life as giving our lives meaning and purpose beyond simple existence. Beyond questions of having a reason to live, however, there is always the question of how our lives can contribute to a worthwhile mission. Do we live as though there is a greater purpose to our lives than the simple questions of existence and self-fulfillment? Is there a larger purpose behind our actions, decisions, and way of living? Paul's letter to Titus contains a list of general advice. Much of the advice in chapter two is not very spiritual. We might wonder at that...

What do you believe your purpose for life is? I have no idea what my purpose of life is.No idea? How about you? My purpose in life is to help her find her purpose in life. Good answer. Good answer. The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven.'' 1 Corinthians 15:45, 47 (NIV) 1. THE PURPOSE: I WAS MADE TO LOVE GOD ''So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.'' Jeremiah is famous for his words of judgment and doom against the people of Judah. Here's is a sample of his prophecy. (Jeremiah 6:16-26 NRSV) God was giving Jeremiah a vision of the coming destruction of Jerusalem. It was a painful vision to bear. Jeremiah would look at the City of Jerusalem and see its future: the crops burned and people going hungry, men, women and children being slaughtered by the sword of an invading army, the destruction of the city, the forced march into exile. Jeremiah cried out in sorrow and grief for this people: (Jeremiah 9:1 NRSV) God gave Jeremiah some relief. There are places...

When I was a kid, watching WW2 movies and TV shows was a big thing. One of the things I remember is hearing a guard raise his gun and say, "State your purpose." Whether someone gained entry or not, depending on them having a stated purpose which was consistent with admission to the building, camp, or headquarters. In this same way, Paul wrote to the church at Corinth and clearly stated His purpose. In 1 Corinthians 9 he writes, "I have become all things to all people that I by all means might save some." I mention this statement because the ink was not dry on the parchment for the letter to Corinthians (to whom he wrote...

Introduction: Today I want to Share with you a message about vision. Personal Vision. Corporate vision as a Church. A. What is a vision? It is a divine destiny! A Divine purpose! Prov 29:18 18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: (KJV) B. God has a vision or purpose for every man! God has created a plan for every human upon the face of this earth. Jer 29:11 11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. (NKJ) We all need to fit into His divine puzzle. We are created for a purpose! Fulfillment is never really found until...

OPEN: One woman shared a story of her childhood as a victim of polio. She said, ''When my mother left me in Sunday School I always asked to wear her locket. She thought I liked the locket, but that wasn't it at all. I knew I wasn't worth coming back for, but I knew she would come back for her locket.''APPLY: What was that little girl's afraid of? She was afraid that she wasn't wanted. BUT, she felt that if she had something with her that was valuable... that her mother would always come back for her. What Paul is telling us in Ephesians 1 is this: God believes we are valuable. God believes we are worth coming back for. And so God has...

If God is going to use you, Sunday School teacher, deacon, Christian, you must choose one great purpose in life. I think the great purpose that every Christian ought to have for his life is the purpose that Paul revealed in the twentieth verse of Philippians, chapter one. According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. What is the one absorbing purpose? That Christ shall be magnified in my body. To me, I cannot think of any greater purpose in life than that. That ought to be the sole...

James 4:14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. The older I get the more I realize how precious and valuable my time is. Time is something we only have once, so we have to make good use of it. We only have so many days to do what we have been given to do here on the Earth, and I want my days to count. I think most people would say the same thing if asked, but are they consciously making the choices that will really count when it's all said and done? I have my share of regrets and I realize that I can not undo...

In January 2012 the Lutheran Church of All Saints in Stockholm Sweden added a Friday night "techno mass' accompanied by ultraviolet lights where the young dance in the isles to the beat of the rock band up on the stage. This Friday night mass is the church's latest attempt to attract young people in a country where attendance at services has been dwindling for decades. Over the past 10 years, membership in Sweden's Lutheran church has fallen 13% and attendance at regular Sunday services plunged 50% to 4.6 million in 2011. Priest Olle Idestrom organizes the mass and says that the feedback has been...

How will we praise our Lord this Christmas season? Will we praise him by simply attending the Christmas pageantry hosted by a multitude of churches? Will we seize the spirit of love and giving, at this time of the year, to reach out to others? Will we praise him with renewed commitments of obedience to his beckoning call on our lives? I submit to you that God, in this season of the year, as well as every day of the annual calendar, longingly desires us to fulfill our God given purpose. For God, that is praise enough. God desires that we present our lives as living sacrifices of obedience. For God, that is praise enough...

WELCOME: Good morning and welcome to Oakdale Community Church. This morning I'm introducing a series I'll be doing next fall entitled "Living Life on Purpose". Join us next week as Tim Ayers, our Pastor of Creative Communication will begin a three week series on "Great Expectations." Let's join together in prayer as we begin to look at (title.) PRAYER: Father, some of us have come here this morning with a direct purpose in mind, and that is to seek an enjoyable time of experiencing your presence here this morning. Some of us got out of bed this morning and the last thing on our mind, or maybe the last thing we wanted to do was go...

As David stood in the Valley of Elah where the battle between Israel and the Philistines, led by their giant Goliath, was about to come a head, David's older brother Eliab angrily demanded, "Why camest thou down hither?" In other words, "What are you doing here? You don't belong here! You're the little brother and you're supposed to be watching the sheep. That's your role in life - your only role. You of all people don't have a thing that can help us in the battle with the Philistines and Goliath, so go back home where you belong. I know your pride and your naughtiness. The only reason you're here is to watch the battle." Eliab saw David...

Mediocrity is defined as "middling, straddling the fence, neither good nor bad; second-rate, without intention." Depression, floundering, listless, aimless: these words characterize the life lived in mediocrity. These words also characterize lives without an all-consuming relationship with Jesus Christ. John Mark, the writer of the gospel of Mark, acknowledged two life-altering facts: (1) the failures and frustrations of your past demonstrate an undeniable need for the power of God in your life today. And (2) The uncertainties of the future demand the power of God in your life today. Are you living in a crisis of mediocrity? Does your heart and soul...

ILLUSTRATION: This November 10th will be the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. It was overloaded with Iron Ore. The didn't realize as they set out to cross that lake that a great Northern storm was coming their way. Massive waves hit the Edmund Fitzgerald and rapidly sank the ship. Some of you will remember the song by Gordon Lightfoot - When suppertime came the old cook came on deck Sayin' ''Fellas, it's too rough t'feed ya.''At 7 P.M. a main hatchway caved in; he said, ''Fellas, it's bin good t'know ya!'' The captain wired in he had water comin' in and the good ship and crew was in peril. And...
