PETER'S DENIAL SERMON OUTLINES

by Brian Fletcher

Jesus tells his disciples (to their disbelief) that he will be crucified and that they will all scatter like scared sheep. Peter says he will fight to the death and when the soldiers show up to take Jesus away, he pulls out his sword and cuts off the ear of one of them. Peter thinks he can take on a whole crowd of armed soldiers. Then Peter runs away, fleeing for his life. But Peter goes back to the courtyard to see what they are going to do with Jesus, but when he is approached and accused of being one of Jesus' disciples he denies it three times. He leaves the courtyard, weeping bitterly. Shame and guilt can be overwhelming...

When you study Jesus and His disciples, you become aware of the fact that there were two disciples which seemed to have caused Him more concern than all of the rest. I refer to Judas Iscariot and to Simon Peter. Judas is the one who betrayed the Lord Jesus Christ. Simon Peter, three times denied that he ever knew the Lord. As we have moved through this book of Mark we have noticed several different details about the life of Simon Peter. There seems to be a special relationship between Simon and Mark's gospel. It is generally believed that Mark was a young protégé of Simon Peter, and that many of the sermons which were written...

OPEN: In Reader's Digest, a young woman told of being employed as a dental receptionist. She said: I was on duty when an extremely nervous patient came for root canal surgery. He was brought into the examining room and made comfortable in the reclining dental chair. The dentist then injected a numbing agent around the patient's tooth, and left the room for a few minutes while the medication took hold. When the dentist returned, the patient was standing next to a tray of dental equipment. ''What are you doing by the surgical instruments?'' asked the surprised dentist. Focused on his task, the patient replied, ''I'm taking out the ones I don't...

And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly (Luke 22:60-62). Peter had terribly fallen. He had denied his Master, denied Him repeatedly, denied Him with oaths, denied Him in His presence while his Master was being smitten and falsely charged. He had denied Him, though he was an apostle, denied Him, though he had declared that should all men forsake Him, yet would he never be offended. It was a sad, sad sin. Remember what...

OPEN: I recently heard a radio announcer tell about a man who went through a drive up at a KFC restaurant. He ordered about $6 worth of food and then pulled up to give his money to the teller. He handed her a $200 bill. It had President George Bush's picture on the front and on the back was a picture of a vegetable with the words beneath it declaring ''I hate broccoli!'' She took the bill and gave him his food and exact change. He drove away, apparently never to be seen again. (For the record, there are no $200 bills and no US legitimate currency has the picture of President George Bush - let alone broccoli - on it.''By contrast, this is a...

What was Peter doing? Just a few hours before this he was ready to single-handedly take on several hundred Roman soldiers. But now, Peter is denying that he even knows Jesus. Was Peter just in shock over what had taken place in the last few hours? Was Peter scared? Was he confused? Had Peter lost hope? More than likely Peter was feeling and experiencing all of these emotions. If he was able to overhear what was going on inside, then he just heard that Jesus was sentenced to death. Had it come to this? The last three years had been quite an adventure. Peter witnessed Jesus healing people, teaching the truths of...

I. THE FAILURE OF THE SAINT Luke 22:57 (CSV) - But he denied it: ''Woman, I don't know Him!'' A. We Fail Because of Pride Luke 22:33-34 - (33) ''Lord,'' he told Him, ''I'm ready to go with You both to prison and to death!'' (34)''I tell you, Peter,'' He said, ''the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know Me!'' B. We Fail Because of Prayerlessness Luke 22:45-46 - (45) When He got up from prayer and came to the disciples, He found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief (46) ''Why are you sleeping?'' He asked them. ''Get up and pray, so that you won't enter into temptation.'' C. We Fail Because of...

There are many sounds one hears in the city. When my family and I moved to New Orleans, we heard ships going down Industrial Canal. We heard airplanes making their way to and from the airport. We heard sirens and more sirens screaming down I-10. We heard traffic and more traffic and more traffic. But one sound we did not hear was the crowing of a rooster! But there is still one city in the world where to this day one can hear a rooster crow. In 1971 I heard a rooster crow just outside my window at the Shepherd's Hotel in Jerusalem. I immediately thought of Simon Peter. There were many long ago who paid little attention...

The year was 1999. They were playing the British Open in Carnoustie, Scotland. The battle was back and forth with the golfers. But when it came down to it on Sunday, one golfer rose above the crowd. His name was Jean Van de Velde. He was from France. Everyone thought he was going to win. He came to the 18th tee with a three-shot lead. Four days of the tournament, the British Open, and there was a 490-yard, par-4. It wasn't an easy hole, he had a three-shot lead, all he had to do was get a 6, get a double bogey. Now, for a hack like me, that would be a tall order, but for a professional golfer to get a double bogey is no big deal. So, they...

Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest Peter followed at a distance. But when they had kindled afire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat dawn with them. A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him" But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said. A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of then" "Man, I am not! Peter replied About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean." Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're...

INTRO: I want you to take God's precious, inspired and holy Word now this morning and be finding your place at Luke chapter 22 if you would. We are in a series of studies on 12 ordinary men who were called by Jesus to do some very extraordinary things, and of course, we're talking and learning about the 12 disciples (or the 12 apostles). And as I shared with you last week, one of the things that makes these men so wonderful and applicable for us to study is the fact that they were so very human. They had their faults and their failures, their strengths and their weaknesses, their victories and their defeats just like we do...

One of the big "take homes" from this weekend's teaching was to out-serve those we most regularly come in contact with, starting in your family/home. What are a couple of ways you're serving at home? Are there two or three things you can add to your service at home? If so, explain. Looking back at this week's teaching and study, is there one other thing that's important for you to remember? Growth Group Homework QUICK REVIEW Looking back at your notes from this week's teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged or confused you? MY STORY 1. How would you have defined...

Food for Thought (Questions and Scriptures for further personal study) 1. King David is a great example of someone who faced failure and sin in his life. One of those failures was an affair he had with a neighbor's wife and a cover-up that included the murder of her husband. What ''closet cleaning'' steps do you see David taking in Psalm 51:1-17? When it comes to dealing with your own failure and sin, is there any part of David's prayer that would be helpful for you to use? What challenges or benefits can you see from taking the ''closet cleaning'' advice given to us in James 5:16? 2. Have you ever thought that someone who was confessing...

In my dream I came to the celestial city where all was glorious and fair. My soul was ravished with the beauty that I saw and the music that I heard, harpers harping with their harps, and the ten thousand times ten thousand praising the Lamb that was slain. At first, however, I knew not just where to go or with what company to associate myself, for in that shining city I saw many throngs assembled. One of the archangels, seeing my hesitation and perplexity, came forward and accosted me. He asked me if I would like him to conduct me to one of the assemblies that I saw. I told him that I was not sure which one to choose; but...

Robert Knievel, who took the nicknamed Evel, was an American daredevil who attempted over 75 motorcycle jumps between 1965 and 1980. One of his famous jumps was over the fountains at Caesars Palace on November 17, 1967. He landed short of the ramp which caused him to go over the handlebars and resulted in him breaking his hip, pelvis, femur, wrist and both ankles. His concussion kept him in the hospital in a coma for 29 days. During those 75 jumps he broke 433 bones which earned him an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records as the survivor of “the most broken bones in a lifetime.” His son Robbie followed in his...

People have fallen asleep in church for ages. (We used a graphic of "Mr. Bean" falling asleep in church). Sometimes they fall asleep because… They got up too early Or they've been up too late the night before Or the sermon's boring Or because they've worked hard all week and they just can't help themselves BUT then there are other times, when people fall asleep but have their eyes "wide Open"…ILLUS: Years ago (when I was younger) I remember being in love with a special girl. She occupied my thoughts all the time - even when I was at church. One day, at church, during the sermon. I began thinking about her, and how much...
