PATIENCE SERMON OUTLINES

Background: The Jewish people have been scattered because of persecution. They are now living abroad in foreign countries. They are experiencing some challenging times and James is writing to encourage them. James does not spend much time in teaching doctrine but rather in how our Christian Faith should be lived out. James is encouraging those that are being oppressed by the land owners to have Patience in the Lord. So many Christians believe that they will never have to go through stuff in life. That somehow we believe that if we do all the right things nothing will ever come to test our faith. James gives us some insights...

Today we're going to talk about patience, the need for patience. We're going to talk about The Season of Waiting, when you are on hold and sometimes you feel like God has put you on hold. And so today we'll look at several passages in God's word that deal with the season of waiting. Maybe you're waiting on God to answer a prayer, or maybe this past week you've been waiting on someone else to do a certain thing, to respond in a certain way. All of us know what it's like to wait. And that's why the Bible has so much to say about patience. For the season of waiting, we need patience. Look at Proverbs 16:32: ''Better a patient man than...

Would you take God's word and turn to James chapter one. James is one of the most straight forward men in all of the Bible. He never minces words. If you want to know what James is thinking he'll be very happy to tell you and of course he tells you by divine inspiration. Tonight brother James is going to talk to us about patience and I want to talk to you about the purpose and power of patience or patience perfect work. James chapter one, verse one. James, a servant of God and of our Lord and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations...

1. A first grade teacher and her class of 32 first graders had watched it rain all day long. They couldn't go outside to play and the teacher was stuck in the room with these first graders all day. The last bell had rung and it was time to go home. This teacher began putting galoshes on all 32 of these first graders. 2. She came to the last little girl and she was so excited that she was about finished with this dirty chore. She began to put the galoshes on this little girl and they were unusually tight. She struggled. She strained. She pulled. She tugged. She grunted. She groaned and finally got the galoshes on the feet of that last little girl. Just as...

1. Many may be surprised that anger is actually an attribute of God, given to us for our benefit to help us protect others, ourselves, and bring about justice. Of course it can be distorted, as we so often see, causing undue damage in a variety of settings and relationships. How do the following verses help us evaluate if our anger is expressed in a way that pleases God (Ephesians 4:26)? James 1:19-20 Romans 12:17-19 1 Peter 5:7-8 2. This weekend we heard that being discouraged or angry doesn't necessarily mean we're not being patient. In fact, all too often we think we have to just be positive to show we're remaining faithful...

INTRO: The one quality sorely lacking in our culture and society today is ''patience!'' Just look at our lifestyle: a. instant cereals, instant soup, instant coffee, instant milk, etc.b. instant credit, instant delivery, instant success books c. instant drying glues d. instant winners e. instant pain relief, instant acid indigestion relief, instant relief from hemorrhoid pain, instant whitening teeth, instant eyeglasses (less than an hour!) f. instant on TV sets, instant hot burners on stoves…Is it any wonder that our Christianity often reflects a similar ring: a. we want instant relief from pain and problems - ''name it and claim'' theology b. we want...

Now what are we talking about when we talk about patience? Patience is the Greek word hypomone (Strong's #5278) which is a compound word made up of two other words: hypo (a preposition meaning 'under') and moneo (a verb meaning to 'remain' or 'abide'). Thus, the idea is to 'remain under' or 'abide under' difficult circumstances - as when it is not possible to escape or avoid them. Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, an excellent resource for those who want to dig further into the meaning of the original language, gives the meaning as 'to bear up courageously (under suffering).' Longsuffering is the Greek...

Jesus Christ was the most patient person who ever lived. Should not those of us who follow Him be. We Americans are the only people in the world who stand before microwaves repeating, ''Hurry up! Hurry up!''Many are characterized by the person who prayed, ''God give me patience - and give it to me RIGHT NOW!'' Patience is the ability to respond without pinging off the wall because you haven't experienced instant gratification. Patience is an active emotion. It is a practical expression of faith. It is pleasing to God and contributes to personal happiness. I. A DEFINITION OF PATIENCE It will be helpful to distinguish one quality...

Introduction: James was still addressing the suffering saints when he wrote, ''Be patient.''That was the counsel at the beginning of his letter in Chapter 1:1-5, and it was his counsel as his letter came to a close. Why should we be patient? God is not going to right all the wrongs in this world during this time until Jesus Christ returns, and therefore, we believers must patiently endure and hope the judge is standing at the door. (Act of entering.) Now three times James reminds us of the coming of the Lord (Chapter 5:7, 8, 9) This is the ''blessed hope,' of a Christian. (Titus 2:13) We as Christians should not expect to have everything...

There are some virtues which are exclusive virtues and are only demanded in peculiar circumstances. They have at the best a partial application. In certain emergencies they are obligatory or in certain social relationships; that virtue of which we speak tonight can never be included among these. The child needs patience when he goes to school, for without it he will never learn. The boy needs patience on the football field, for without it he will never play. The mother needs it among her growing children; the father, amid the anxieties of business; he who is in work needs it every day, and he who is out of work needs it even...

After the fall of France when it was realized that England was the last fortress of freedom in Europe, there was a fable that spread across the continent that gave great hope to the British, the French and other captive peoples. The story related that in July 1940, when England faced the enemy alone, Hitler invited Churchill to Paris for a secret conference. Churchill arrived by plane and was escorted to the Chateau of Fontainebleau, where Hitler and Mussolini awaited him at a tea table beside the famous carp pool. The Fuhrer lost no time. "Here is what I've got to say to you, Churchill: England is finished. Sign this...

James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3. knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. Patience is a work of perfection. Without patience, we can not inherit the promise. It is a requirement to seeing our faith fulfilled. It is the enabler to our faith, the ability to hold on to our faith when all seems lost. It allows our faith to endure. In other words, we will not give up our faith in the face of whatever comes our way, no matter how long it takes. Strong's Bible Dictionary says that patience is cheerful...

INTRODUCTION: In last year's movie ''Evan Almighty'', God, played by Morgan Freeman, contacts a congressman named Evan and tells him to build an ark in preparation for a great flood. There are some parallels in the movie to the account of Noah's Ark in Genesis chapter 6, but there are some departures as well. One conversation between God and Evan's wife, Joan, goes like this: God: I love that story, Noah and the Ark. You know, a lot of people miss the point of that story. They think it's about God's wrath and anger. Joan: What is the story about then? God: Well, I think it's a love story about believing in each other. You know...

Introduction: We are continuing our study of the book of James. We keep in mind that James is a practical person and so he keeps coming back to the worldly things we tend to go after. We can't ever get enough of this reminder. Last week we learned that we should be asking God what it is He wants to get out of our lives and not what we want to get for our lives. People were judging each other and trying to make themselves look better than other people. They were also planning and trying to get rich by going to other cities for a year or so and setting up a business to make money and then returning to their own city and bragging about it...

This morning the scene in 8 th chapter of the Revelation explains to us one of the great mysteries of Heaven. We see how God responds to the prayers of His saints. We see into the inner court of the Lord God Almighty and how there standing in God's presence are seven archangels. And we see how the Patience of Jesus and the prayers of the saints work together to fulfil God's purposes. Finally we see how the vengeance God has promised to His people is finally poured out upon sinful earth in Heaven's perfect time. GOD WAITS - TIME TO REPENT: (v. 1-2) Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations...

OPEN: How many of you like to put together jigsaw puzzles. Diana and I have always doing that… although we've not done it nearly so much since we've had kids. Sometime ago, I ran across the following article: ''Everything I needed to know about life, I learned from a jigsaw puzzle.''1. Establish the border first. Boundaries give a sense of security and order. 2. When things aren't going so well, take a break. Everything will look different when you return. 3. Working together with friends and family makes any task quicker and more fun. 4. The creator of the puzzle gave you the picture as a guidebook 5. Don't force a fit. If something...
