Obadiah, the Prophet of the Family Feud
by J. Gerald Harris
There is really not very much background information which I can give you about either Obadiah, the man, or Obadiah, the book of prophecy. Obadiah means ''servant of the Lord.'' I have an idea that when he was a little boy his mother called him ''Obie.'' The prophecy which bears his name is concise and succinct. It is the shortest book in the Old Testament, consisting of only 21 verses. I saw that Obadiah is the prophet of a family feud because he reports the conflict that existed between Edom and Israel. Israel and Edom had a conflict that raged for centuries similar to the conflict that raged between the Hatfield's and the McCoy's...
Obadiah (5 of 17)
by Larry Osborne
Two Things Worth Remembering: 1. An attitude of superiority can become deadly 2. Dad never forgets who hurts his children Food for Thought (Questions and Scriptures for further personal study) 1. One of the important ways to avoid being an Edomite is to develop humility instead of pride. Noted author C.S. Lewis wrote, ''the essential vice, the utmost evil, is pride - pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.'' Solomon had quite a bit to say about pride and arrogance as well. Jot down a few of his observations from the Proverbs listed below. Even though pride has so many negative consequences...
Minor Prophets
by Jerry Vines
In the Hebrew bible they are known as the twelve. I have said to you that the term minor prophet is a misnomer because we are not implying by the use of that title that their messages are any less important. Primarily they are called this because of the brevity of their messages. But what they had to say was exceedingly important. Everyone of these prophets of God had a point to make. They had a message to give. And Obadiah is no exception. Now the book begins with the simple statement, ''The vision of Obadiah.'' And the only thing to know about the prophet is what we find right there. We do not know the date when Obadiah lived...
Obadiah: The Prophet of the Family Feud (45 of 54)
by Stan Coffey
TITLE: The Book of Obediah neither identifies the prophet, (except by name), nor clearly dates the writing. There are 13 men names in the Old Testament named Obediah, but we do not have any indication that any of these Obediah's mentioned elsewhere are the Obediah that wrote this book. His name means, ''The Servant of the Lord.'' THEME: This is a book written to two brothers and their descendants who- have through the centuries been involved in a family feud. This family feud goes back to the Book of Genesis and to the story of Jacob and Esau. (Gen. 36:1). We're told that Esau is the father of Edom and is the progenitor...
Series: Taking God Seriously (2 of 6)
by Stuart Briscoe
Jerome noted that the difficulties presented by Obadiah, the shortest book in the Old Testament, are in inverse proportion to its size. These difficulties notwithstanding, the message of God's authoritative rule in the affairs of men is easy to grasp. I. Edom's Situation Seen from Judah's Perspective...
Obadiah; Or, Early Piety Eminent Piety
by Charles H. Spurgeon
I suspect that Elijah did not think very much of Obadiah. He does not treat him with any great consideration but addresses him more sharply than one would expect from a fellow believer. Elijah was the man of action-bold, always to the front, with nothing to conceal; Obadiah was a quiet believer, true and steadfast, but in a very difficult position, and therefore driven to perform his duty in a less open manner. His faith in the Lord swayed his life but did not drive him out of the court. I notice that even after Elijah had learned more of him at this interview, he speaks concerning God's people as if he did not reckon much upon...
The Mother of All Sins (2 of 2)
by Ernest Easley
Now let's see how well you remember the answers to last weeks Bible Trivia. How many one- chapter books are there in the Bible? 5. There is 1 in the Old Testament and 4 in the New Testament. And who can name these 5 one-chapter books? Obadiah, Philemon, 2 John, 3 John, Jude! These 5 books remind me of emails: they get to the point! No chasing rabbits. No long stories. No rambling. Just the facts! They cut to the chase! Well, God has 5 emails for us throughout the Bible. The tragedy is that they are often overlooked. Last Sunday night after worship, a man came up to me and said, "Pastor, my Bible is marked up with...
Obadiah: The Deceitfulness of Pride (12 of 20)
by Roger Thomas
Introduction: Proverbs says, ''Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.'' (16:18) ''The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.'' (12:15) That's the message of Obadiah. Verse 3 contains the theme, ''the pride of your heart has deceived you.'' The little book of Obadiah is all about the deceitfulness of pride and its horrible consequences. The book is the smallest in the Old Testament with only twenty-one verses. But behind it lies a powerful message for men and nations. The words were addressed to Israel's neighbor nation Edom, but they could just as easily be targeted at any of us....
Evolution and You (or Why God Hated Esau)
by Dr. J. Vernon McGee
The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom: We have heard a rumor from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, Arise, and let us rise up against her in battle. (Obadiah 1) Who was Obadiah? He was one of four prophets about whom we know absolutely nothing, except that he wrote prophecy. The other three prophets are Habakkuk, Haggai, and Malachi. All were great prophets, yet we know nothing concerning them. Therefore, when we ask, ''Who is Obadiah?'' I have to answer truthfully, ''I do not know.'' Yet his name was as common in Israel as Abdullah is among the Arabs today....
Formula for Revival
by Adrian Rogers
Today we are thinking on this subject, ''The Formula for Revival.'' [read through verse 2] The people in Samaria were in a difficult situation. There had been a drought in the land for 3 years; not a drop of rain had fallen. And the reason there was no rain was that God was judging the land. And they were in a crisis, but the crisis was about to end. For God knew that before long the fire would fall from heaven, and then the rain would come. And that's the sequence, first the fire and then the rain. First the cleansing fire and then the cooling flood. The fire represents God's cleansing judgment, the flood represents the showers of blessing as we are going to see in just a moment. America is in difficulty. We as a nation...
