JOSHUA SERMON OUTLINES

by Stan Coffey

After the death of Moses, God placed His hand upon Joshua and called him to lead the people across the Jordan River into the land that He had promised to give them. In God's initial instructions in the first chapter of Joshua, the Lord makes clear His desire to prosper Joshua and the people of Israel. In Joshua 1:7 we read, "...that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest." We read again in the latter part of verse 8, "...for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous." What God said to Joshua, God also is saying to you and to me today. In I Corinthians 10:11, the Bible says that all these things happen to them as examples...

OPEN: (A poem by Edgar A. Guest) 'Somebody said that it couldn't be done, But he with a chuckle replied ''maybe it couldn't'', but he would be one who wouldn't say so till he tried. So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin on his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing that couldn't be done - and he did it. Somebody scoffed: ''Oh, you'll never do that; at least no one ever has done it''But he took off his coat and he took of his hat, and the first thing we knew he'd begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing that couldn't be...

INTRO: I want you to take your Bibles this morning and be finding your place at the Old Testament book of Joshua if you will. I want to begin a new series of studies today on what it really means to live a life that's worth living. ILLUS: When I was in high school and the first part of college, I worked during the summers at the University of Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station in Milan, TN. We'd spend the first half of the summer working ourselves to death chopping corn and cotton, hauling hay, spraying weeds and driving tractors and the second half of the summer sleeping in an old custom Chevy pickup truck under the shade...

This book of Joshua is wonderful. We have already studied the conquest of Jericho. Now we come to the conquest of Ai in chapter 8, this great chapter of Joshua. You remember that the people of Israel had tried to take Ai before they were defeated because there was sin in the camp. But we learned that when they found the sin, and it was confessed and judged, then the Lord came back, sin makes God walk away from us, but God came back to the people and blessed them and now that sin is confessed and gotten right, God says, "fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise...

Turn to the book of Joshua would you please? Now, Joshua is the book of victory and it's the old testament book that describes the new testament victory that we have in our Lord Jesus Christ. For Joshua is a picture, a type, an illustration of the Lord Jesus Christ. As a matter of fact, the name in the Old Testament, Joshua is the Hebrew name of our New Testament name, Jesus. It's very interesting isn't it? That Joshua represents and pictures the victory that Jesus can give us. The Lord Jesus is our heavenly Joshua who leads us into the land of promise, the land of fulfillment of the land of victory. And didn't give us a victory...

Huge tree .... recently collapsed in Colorado -- estimated to be over 400 years old!-- Over the centuries, it had .... been struck by lightning 14 times ... braved countless storms of tremendous intensity .... even survived an earthquake that devastated the region.-- What finally destroyed this mighty guardian of the forest?-- Beetles .... a tiny bug! (A) So often .... not the major crises -- the big problems that do us in -- or bring discouragement or despair.... destroy marriages .... relationships .... businesses. (B) It's the daily setbacks .... the small things that overwhelm us .... defeat us! Song of Solomon 2:15 says that it is "the little...

I love to play tennis but I have a big problem with my follow-through. When I hit the ball, instead of bringing the racket on through to complete the swing, I stop--and the ball sails out of bounds. I just can't remember to follow through. That's why I gave up golf. In every sport, following through seems to be necessary. A few days ago I was watching a Little League baseball game. The pitcher, who looked to be about seven or eight years old, was having a tough time getting the ball across. After a bad pitch, his mother yelled from the bleachers, "Follow through, Greg! Follow through!" I keep hoping I'll find a sport that doesn't...

Intro: It was only a little comma, but it cost the Lockheed corporation millions of dollars! An error was made in a contract with an international customer-a misplaced comma in a crucial number. The company insisted that the manufacturer honor the contract as written. Unfortunately for Lockheed, the error was made in an equation that adjusted the sales price, and it cost them $70 million. - Our Daily Bread; ''People who say that small things don't bother them have never slept in a room with a mosquito.'' -Dennis Rainey; God had given His people a miraculous victory at the mighty Jericho, but a much smaller...

It is interesting that Joshua, like Moses, sent spies out to look at the land. Remember that Joshua is a military leader and as a military leader, he is looking into the best way to enter in the land. There was nothing wrong with Joshua doing this at all. The two spies went into the house of a harlot named Rahab. There was not, and is not, any indication that these two men had any intention of immorality in their thinking. God sovereignly brought these two spies to her home because she would embrace the God of Israel. Read vs 2 No one knows how the king knew of the spies arrival, but word got to him that these two men were in the...

INTRO: A preacher recently quit the ministry after more than 20 years of faithful, dedicated service and became a funeral director. When asked why he changed vocations, he said: I spent 10 years trying to straighten out John and he's still an alcoholic. Then I spent three and one-half years trying to straighten out Harold and Susan's marriage problems and they ended up getting a divorce. Later I tried for two years to help Bob kick his drug habit and he is still an addict. Now, at the funeral home, when I straighten them out, they stay straight!" 1) The message of the church is one of grace and forgiveness. A Christian's sins are...
