JOSEPH SERMON OUTLINES

by Clarence E. Macartney

Springtime on the Plain of Dothan, in the Vale of Esdraelon. To the south the mountains of Samaria, to the north the mountains of Gilboa. Standing on one of the lower ranges of the bordering mountains, we see black dots against the green grass of the plain. These are the black tents of the sons of Jacob who are feeding their flocks on the Plain of Dothan. And yonder are white dots. These are flocks of sheep against the green of the plain, like lingering snow on a March day. But away yonder, coming from the south with greetings from his father for his brethren, is Joseph, his coat of many colors brushing the dews from the lips of the spring....

Let me ask you a question-by show of hands-How many of you would say your life has turned out exactly like you planned it when you were a teenager? Just put your hand up-your life now is just what you had planned out. Not many, right? Do you see this? I know it didn't work out for me, because when I was about 14, 15 years old, I had a very clear dream for my life. My hero was...anyone know who my hero was (if you came to the Vision Summit last weekend and heard me share this, don't say it...)? My hero was Arnold Schwarzenegger, and my dream was to be a professional bodybuilder. And obviously that didn't work out...

Sometimes the Bible has a way of wrapping up the life of a person in a single sentence. For intances, when we are told about the life of Barnabas in the New Testament, the Bible says he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith. I wonder what God's word would be concerning us if, in one sentence, he summarized our life. Joseph's life is summarized in the New Testament as well. In the seventh chapter of the book of Acts and in the nineth verse, the Bible says this about Joseph: God was with him. Those four simple words summarize the entire life of Joseph. God was with him. Regardless of the circumstances that came to his life...

OPEN: Years ago there was a TV show called The Honeymooners (does anyone remember it)? Art Carney played one of the characters on the show Ed Norton - a kind of happy go lucky, but fairly slow thinking worker in the sewer systems of the city. Ed Norton once summed up his philosophy of life with these words: When the tides of life turn against you, And the current upsets your boat,Don't waste those tears on what might have been,Just lie on your back and float. APPLY: Today I want to introduce you a man who repeatedly who saw the tides of life turn against him. Whose boat was upset more than once. A man whose...

SUMMARY: The account of Joseph in Genesis illustrates the doctrine of the sovereignty (control) of God. In this sermon we see that a confidence in God's sovereignty inspires great integrity. Introduction: Video clip of song from ''Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'' entitled ''Poor, poor Joseph.'' When we last left Joseph, his father had sent him to check up on his older brothers in Shechem. As was artistically portrayed in this morning's bumper video, when Joseph finally caught up with his brothers, they beat him and sold him to a caravan of Ishmaelite traders. The traders took him to Egypt and sold him as a household slave...

Last week we stopped the story of Joseph where he had been sold by his brothers into slavery. The brothers' hatred of Joseph was so intense that they had at first planned to kill him. They threw him into a cistern (a pit in the ground dug out to hold water) and ate their lunch while discussing just how they would handle the murder. But then some traders came by and the brothers decided it would be better to sell Joseph off as a slave. The traders in turn take him to Egypt where he is sold to Potiphar, a captain in Pharaoh's military guard (Genesis 39:1). Joseph's dreams had been shattered. ''The dreamer,'' as his brothers contemptuously...

1. We all remember the inspiring story of Joseph and his victory over the worst of circumstances...betrayed by his own brothers, and then later exalted by God to a position of honor and power. 2. Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob. The Bible says in (37:3), Israel (Jacob) loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age.'' Because of his father's favoritism, his brothers were jealous of him. It says in (37:4), that ''they hated him.'' In (vs. 11) of the same chapter, it says, ''they envied him.'' And finally, in (vs. 18), we are told that ''they conspired against him,'' selling him into slavery. 2. Here in chapter 39...

I want to ask you again to turn with me to Genesis 37. This 37th chapter of Genesis reminds us that God's Word is inexhaustible. Now matter how many times you read it … there is always something new. And just about the time you start thinking that there isn't anything else to discover … God gives you another nugget of truth. That's especially truth for this 37th chapter of Genesis. For instance .. last Sunday night we saw a beautiful portrait of Jesus from the life of Joseph. That like Jesus .. Joseph was the Beloved Son … the Rejected Servant and the Exalted Sovereign. And then this morning from this 37th chapter .. we learned How to...

1. I am leery of people who are always talking about how God spoke to them in dreams. I read about one fellow who dreamed he ate a 10 pound marshmallow and woke up and his pillow was gone. Today God speaks to His people through His word, not through dreams. 2. Whereas in the New Testament era God speaks through His word, during the Old Testament era God sometimes spoke to people by dreams. Dreams were especially popular in the life of Joseph. 3. It is interesting the number of times dreams are associated with Joseph: * (Gen.37:5) ''Joseph dreamed a dream.'' * (Gen.37:9) ''And he dreamed yet another dream....

'Now glory be to God, who by His mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of - infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes.' Eph. 3:20 (LB) I. THE FORMATION STAGE ''Joseph, a young man of seventeen … had a dream ….'' Gen. 37:2, 5 (NIV) ''Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.'' Gen. 37:5 (NIV) II. THE CHARACTER-BUILDING STAGE ''Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph's character.'' Ps. 105:19 (NLT) • Problems strip away my pride '''Here comes that dreamer!' they said...

This sermon is about one of the bible's most precious father's, though he is often overlooked and I have labeled him as the ''Forgotten Father.'' Joseph was willing to take on the role of being a ''step-father'' and because of his willingness to fulfill this role; Jesus was blessed with an earthly father. There are many good men that are much like Joseph, they have had the opportunity to step into a role of fathering a child that was not theirs through natural birth, but they were willing to step into the role and embrace it!!! I want to lift up those brave men that have taken on the role of being a true ''step-dad.''I - The Difficult Circumstances...

1. The dying words and last words of an individual are usually some of the best remembered words of a person. At times, one's last words are a mirror into their soul. 2. Patrick Henry's last words were: "Here is a book worth more than all the other books which were ever printed; yet it is my misfortune never to have, till lately, found time to read it with proper attention and feeling." 3. Thomas Paine, the renowned American author and noted infidel, said in the final moments of his life: "I would gives worlds, if I had them, that "Age of Reason" had not been published. O Lord, help me! O God what have I done to suffer so much? But...

How many of you either had a problem this past week or you know somebody who's had a problem or you live with a problem? Let me see your hands. Let me ask you this: does the fact that you have problems and pressures mean that you are not experiencing the favor of God? No, no, no. Many times God uses problems and pressures to mold us and to shape us and all the while we are experiencing His favor, even though we may not be aware of it. Another question: what if you do the right thing at the right time? Does that mean that you get God's favor immediately and that it's like you want it to be? Again the answer is no. Joseph...

SUMMARY: The account of Joseph in Genesis illustrates the doctrine of the sovereignty (control) of God. In this sermon we see that a confidence in God's sovereignty inspires great courage. INTRODUCTION: A visiting Preacher was attending a men's breakfast in Farm Country. He asked one of the impressive older farmers in attendance to say grace that morning. After all were seated, the older farmer began- ''Lord, I hate buttermilk. The Preacher opened one eye and wondered to himself where this was going. Then the farmer loudly proclaimed, ''Lord, I hate lard.''Now the Preacher was worried. However, without missing a beat...

Christianity - the art of receiving rather than the skills of reaching. Faith is not the art of getting what you want from God, it is the ability to trust in God. No matter where 'Joseph is, he always acts like who God has meant for him to be. vs. 18 - Conspiracy inevitably happens to the person who is doing God's will for their life. vs. 20 - ''We shall see what becomes of his dreams.'' - Satan has no power to kill the dream. - Satan has no power to kill the dreamer.- Satan orchestrates events to get us to kill the dreams and reject being a dreamer. None of us are formed by the events in our lives-we are shaped by our responses. THREE IMPORTANT...

We are going to begin our final series of studies in the book of Genesis which revolve around the life of the young man named Joseph. Joseph is one of the most familiar characters in all of the Bible. It is a story which many of you have been hearing all of your life. The story of Joseph, in the book of Genesis, takes up about 14 chapters. The last 14 chapters in this book of Genesis are devoted to the life of this young man Joseph. That's about one fourth of the contents of the entire book of Genesis. We raise the question, why is it that the Bible spent so much time talking about the life of one individual. I think there are several reasons why this...

This sermon contains a fully alliterated outline, with sub-points. Theme: ''Joseph was a very godly man with a fantastic faith'' A lady told her husband that she had dreamed that he had bought her a diamond necklace for Christmas! The husband responded positively to her dream by bringing her a beautifully wrapped gift. As she eagerly tore open the wrapping to see her diamond necklace, all she found was a little book. It was titled, 'How to interpret your dreams'! Talk about having a bad day!!! It was one of the worst days of my life: The washing machine broke down, the telephone kept ringing, my head ached, and the mail carrier...

If you have your Bibles with you now this evening, be finding your way to Genesis, chapter number 41. Genesis chapter 41. We're looking tonight at what I shared with you this morning, I'm calling it ''The Exaltation of Joseph.'' Genesis 41, beginning at verse 41. Let's read a few verses to get all of our minds and hearts going in the same direction. If you're in Genesis 41:41, say amen. The Bible says there, ''41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, ''See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.'' 42 Then Pharaoh took his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph's hand; and he clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain...
