1. I am beginning a series of messages entitled, ''How to Deal With How You Feel.'' I purposely begin with depression. Because depression is America's number one emotional disorder. One out of every eight people listening to me, are in some state of depression this morning. 2. Now there is a difference between ordinary sadness, which we all experience from time to time, and out and out depression. There is a difference between having the ''blahs'' and having the ''blues.'' 3. Elijah wasn't just sad - he was depressed. Now what is the difference? Dr. Aaron T. Beck has stated that depression differs from sadness in that it is more intense...

Our emotions often influence our thoughts and control our actions. We act out how we feel by what we say and by what we do. That is why Paul wrote, ''In your anger do not sin'' (Ephesians 4:26). Another emotion we experience is discouragement and we can become discouraged for many different reasons:1. Someone lets us down by not doing what they said they would. 2. Things don't turn out the way we had hoped they would. 3. Life is not fair and our good deeds are not recognized. 4. God's moral standards are being changed by society. They call good evil and evil good (Isaiah 5:20). The greater our expectations the...

We often have difficulties in dealing with psychological disorders. We are so used to thinking that we can be in control of ourselves, our actions, our speech, and our decisions that it is very hard to grasp that a psychological disorder is just as much an infirmity as appendicitis, cancer, pneumonia, or gout. It makes it harder for us to deal with something like clinical depression along the same lines as we deal with the flu, diabetes, or acid reflux. It is hard enough for us to understand dementia or Alzheimer's in a way that does not attribute shame or guilt on the victims of these conditions. With mental illnesses like depression, we...

Psychiatry students were in their college class one day when their professor began a discussion to prove a point. ''What we're going to talk about today,'' the professor said, ''are the emotional extremes that many mentally disturbed people go through… for example ''What's the opposite of joy?'' he asked one student. ''Sadness'' the student answered. ''The opposite of depression?'' he asked a young lady. ''Elation,'' she replied. Turning to a young man from Texas he asked ''the opposite of woe?'' ''Well, now,'' the Texan replied ''I suppose the opposite of woe, would be giddy up.'' APPLY: Depression. According to Psychiatrists...

We are starting a new series entitled Toxic Emotions. We must understand that emotions are not the problem but Toxic Emotions are the problem In fact God created us with the ability to experience all types of emotions. We are a triune being: Body, Soul and Spirit. We have a physical body and a soul: mind, will and emotions and our Spirit man. The challenge is not to be ruled by emotions but for us to rule our emotions. According to the dictionary emotions are ''a complex, usually strong subjective response…involving Physiological changes as a preparation for action.'' The problem is that many people allow their emotions...

Depression can be a very debilitating experience. Sometimes depression can be caused by really depressing circumstances: ILLUS: Like the man who went in for a corn on his foot, it was too painful to ignore. Because of the pain he asked for an anesthetic. It was injected and he had an allergic reaction so severe his heart stopped. The frantic doctors immediately operated and administered direct heart message to revive him. In the process of the operation an accidental overdose of oxygen was given and another surgery had to be performed to deal with the swollen stomach that resulted. After 2 operations now he was being...

Please turn to First Kings chapter 19, First Kings chapter 19. We're going to finish up our series today entitled, "God's Message in Your Emotions: Tracing Emotional Pain to Victorious Living." Now we've looked at many different emotions in this series. We've looked at the emotion of inferiority, of anger, of loneliness, of worry, of frustration, of guilt, of discontentment. And today, we want to look at the very sad and ugly and debilitating emotion called depression. Depression is something that I think everybody in this room can relate to. You know, it, it ranges from the Monday morning blues to full-blown clinical depression. And somewhere...

One of the most well known quotes is: ''Absolute power corrupts absolutely.'' Absolute monarchies are those in which all power is taken by the king or ruler. Roman emperors declared they were gods and Napoleon Bonaparte declared he was emperor. John Acton was an English politician, historian and writer. In a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887 he wrote, ''Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.'' People use their position and power for their own selfish desires because of their sin nature. The more powerful a person is the more evil they can...

God knows everything that takes place so even though people think they get away with something they have not fooled him. Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good. He blesses those who keep his laws and punishes those who don't. People may get away with their sin for a while, but eventually God calls them to account and will punish them because he is just. Psalm 89:14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. American theologian William Shedd (d. 1894) - ''God cannot lay down a law, affix a penalty, and...

INTRO: We live in a society driven by passions. It is amazingly ironic that at a time when our society has such a developed educational system and more and more people are getting higher degrees that we are still largely ruled by our emotions. Evidence for this can be found at the highest levels of society, where leaders have given themselves over to satisfying their own passions rather than living by godly principles. We must be careful to remember to live by principles rather than just passion, failure to remember who we are and what we stand for can result in the loss of our witness. It is so important to remember who and what we...
