JAMES SERMON OUTLINES

by Stan Coffey

AUTHORSHIP: There has been controversy waged about the author of the book of James. The writer calls himself "James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ." The traditional view is that he was "the Lord's brother" (Gal. 1:19), an individual prominent in the Jerusalem church and one who took a leading part in the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15; see also Matt. 13:55, Gal. 2:9). During the Lord's earthly life James was not a believer, but the Lord appeared to him after His resurrection (1 Cor. 15:7). Other men named James in Scripture include James the son of Zebedee and brother of John (Matt. 4:17-22), James the son of...

Turn with me now in your Bibles to the Book of James. It is a wonderful book. I have been meditating in it and one of these days soon I hope to go through this marvelous book. It is one of the early epistles, one of the closest to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus from the dead and His ascension back to heaven. This book was written about A. D. 50, very close to the time when He died on the Cross and rose from the dead, ascended back to heaven and took His position at God's right hand. A. D. 50! One of the earliest books of the New Testament period. The Book of James. We read these words in the first verse: ''James, a...

1. I read one of the most interesting descriptions of an experience that every person, by necessity, has had in the history of the human race, and I want you to see if you can find yourself in this description. Your world is dark, safe, secure. You are bathed in warm liquid, cushioned from shock. You do nothing for yourself; you are fed automatically, and a murmuring heartbeat assures you that someone larger than you feels all your needs. Your life consists of simple waiting--you're not sure what to wait for, but any change seems far away and scary. You meet no sharp objects, no pain, no threatening adventures. A fine existence. One day...

Thank you, brother Gilbert, would you take your bibles please now, and turn to James chapter three as we continue our journey with James. He has left us bruised and bleeding but blessed. And I want to read the first twelve verses of chapter three. James chapter three. "My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation." That is, don't just jump up and profess to be a religious teacher because one day what you teach is going to come under the close scrutiny of the judgment of God. "For in many things we offend all. If anyman offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle...

I'm really glad to be back in our regular series of studies of God's Word. What we try to do is take a book of the Bible and go through that book verse by verse and see what God has to say for us. Very soon now I will begin a series of studies on Wednesday nights in the book of Isaiah. Some time in the future I intend to do a series on the book of Jeremiah, and I plan to do some studies in the book of Deuteronomy. When I do that, if the Lord lets me live long enough to do that and gives me the time to do that, then in the years I have been your pastor I will have had a series of messages through every book of the Bible. That's something I would like to do if the Lord would be pleased. The good news is that...

One day a woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen, shaking frantically with what looked like a wire running from his waist to the electric coffeepot he had in his hand. It seemed that he was being electrocuted. So - intending to jolt him away from the deadly current - she whacked him with a plank that had been left by the back door, breaking his arm in two places. She later she found out that - up until that moment - he had been happily listening to his iPod. APPLY: iPods are the newest craze in music appreciation. Many years ago I spoke to a old friend of mine whom I have not heard from since 1981. In our discussions about the Christian faith I heard some despair in his voice. It was not a despair that I have not heard before; I have heard it from other brothers and sisters in Christ. My friend was concerned about the confusion that seems to reign in the lives of many Christians today. It would seem that many professing Christians have lost their sense of purpose and direction and of their priorities in their walk. This despair sparked a response that I have believed even as a newborn Christian many years ago. I told my old friend that two of the...

During the fall of 1775, a man who appeared to be a typical American farmer attempted to book a room in Baltimore's most fashionable hotel. Concerned about the hotel's reputation, the manager refused to rent the room. The man left and took a room in another hotel. Later, the manager learned he had refused a room to Thomas Jefferson, the Vice-president of the United States. Immediately he sent an invitation to Jefferson, asking him to return to his hotel as his guest. lefferson's response was simple and to the point.- "I value your good intentions highly, but if you have no place for an American farmer, you have no right giving...

King David conquered the nations around Israel and as a result Israel became the largest and most powerful nation in the Middle East in 1,000 BC. When he died his Solomon reigned in his place. We do not know how old Solomon was when he became king, but it seems he was 20-25 years old as he married Pharaoh's daughter. It was not long after he became king, he asked God for wisdom. Wisdom - Heb. ability to make right decisions at the right time. I Kings 3:9 Give your servant an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people? The Lord was...

Scott O'Grady is a former United States Air Force pilot. On June 2, 1995, he was shot down over Bosnia in Herzegovina and forced to eject into hostile territory. The United States Marines eventually rescued O'Grady after six harrowing days and nights of evading the Bosnian Serbs. His ordeal began when two surface-to-air missiles were launched in his direction while on patrol. The first exploded harmlessly between two jets flying in formation. Captain Bob Wright saw the second missile strike O'Grady's jet and burst into flames, but he did not see O'Grady's parachute safely open. O'Grady's jet crashed, he grabbed...

Open your Bibles to the book of James and I hope this morning to encourage you with what a wonderful book this is. You're turning to the first book the New Testament Church got of the New Testament. A lot of times we think of them in order and we think Matthew was the first book but it wasn't. The first book the early church got from the inspired pen of one of God's special servants was James. And God who had not spoken on paper since Malachi- 430 years before Christ now nearly 500 years later God sends this first letter in written form to the Church. Now He sent Christ and Christ spoke as no one ever spoke but his words...

Elijah McCoy (May 2, 1844) was a Canadian-American inventor and engineer who was notable for his 57 U.S. patents. Among other things, he invented the ironing board, the lawn sprinkler and the steam engine lubricator. All of those inventions are still used today. According to www.phrases.org/uk, the popular expression, ''the real McCoy,'' goes back to Elijah McCoy. Railroad engineers worried about the quality of inferior copies, so they requested McCoy's oil-drip cup invention by asking for ''the real McCoy system.''If you're the Real McCoy, you're the genuine article. You're the real deal. You're a person who does what...

We are discovering these days God's gateway to spiritual awakening and breakthroughs and how we need both! Nothing is going to change in our hearts and homes unless God intervenes. And through prayer and fasting, we're seeing the intervention of God. A few minutes after our prayer gathering two weeks ago, one of our members came up to me and said ''Pastor, tonight I was sitting in my chair praying, when suddenly somebody came up behind me, laid hands on me and began praying for me.'' Our member telling me this then said surprisingly, ''They prayed for me to be relieved from the stress in my life. I didn't know...

Back in the 1800s, there was an explorer named John McDouall Stuart, the most famous of all the explorers of Australia's inland. He was determined to find a way from Adelaide in the south, to the Indian Ocean in the north. And he kept trying, and trying, and trying, until he finally did it. It took him five or six attempts, and in the process, he contracted scurvy, lost the sight in his right eye, was attacked by Aborigines, and his clothing was reduced to rags. And all for an earthly mission. He knew what it meant to endure; those early explorers were tough. This is the quality God wants to develop in us. He doesn't want us to be weak, wimpy...

1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. The word for masters, is the word, teachers. This seems to be the plight of many a church, both the person(s) seeking an office as a teacher as well as churches being in a hurry to place teachers in their assembly. How many a teacher should have pondered the great truth that James states here before even thinking about being one who instructs anyone. The teaching ministry is more than just imparting truth or giving lessons. To be a teacher assumes the role of one who is QUALIFIED TO TEACH BY WAY OF EXAMPLE AS WELL...

I have been trying to preach God's Word now since I was a 16-year-old boy. That means for 51 years I have been trying to preach God's Word and for 49 years as a pastor. Every time I come to God's Word, it is just as rich and as fresh and as new and as pertinent and applicable as when I first started. It has to be God's Word. What other book can do that for you? James, the brother of our Lord, was a preacher. He was trained in the Jewish mold of preaching. One of the words for preaching in the Hebrew vocabulary is a word that literally means to string beads. As you read the book of James, that's kind of what James is doing...

Now you talk about CHRISTAINITY IN SHOELEATHER ...that's the book of James! He takes the truths of scripture and explains it on a level where everybody can understand it .. including you! Now for several weeks .. he has been explaining to us what's involved in Welcoming the Word of God into our lives. How we must be Swift to Hear .. Slow to Speak .. Slow to Wrath. How God's word makes a difference in us! God's Word in us makes a difference in how we do marriage. God's Word in us makes a difference in how we raise our children. God's Word in us makes a difference in how we do business. God's word in us makes...

What use is it, my brethren, if a man says he has faith, but he has no works? Can the faith save him? If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them,"go in peace, be warmed and be filled"; and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body; what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. But someone may well say, "You have faith, and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works." You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you...
