GOD THE FATHER SERMON OUTLINES

by Clarence E. Macartney

In the midst of the great storm at sea which finally drove the vessel on the rocks at Malta, Paul encouraged his fellow passengers and assured them that there would be no loss of life, for he said, "I believe God." It is a question if there is anyone living who does not believe in God. It is one thing to talk about disbelief in God, and argue about it, or boast of it; but it is another thing really not to believe in God. As Bacon sagely put it in his essay "Of Atheism," "The Scripture saith, 'The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God'; it is not said, 'The fool hath thought in his heart.'" But when we say that we believe in God, we mean more than...

God is an extravagant Father who is better than you could ever expect! He loves you and cares for you and has your best interest in mind. A deep understanding of God as a loving Father was at the core of Jesus’ ministry on Earth-and it is at the core of how we relate to God. We aren’t orphans anymore. We aren’t alone. We are children of God! He is our Father, and He loves us. Main Scriptures: Luke 15:11-32 - Focus on verses 20-24 for the father’s love and compassion.- Focus on verses 31-32 for the response to the older son. EQUIP: God is an extravagant loving Father. Teaching Point 1: Both sons misunderstood the love of the...

Theme: ''The father that was grieved, gladdened, and gracious''Once at a young girl's funeral, I had to make just such a decision. The girl's father was a member of our church and an air force serviceman. He was an aide on Air Force One and had flown with the president many times. A few generals and lots of upper-crust brass attended the funeral. When it came time to review the open casket at the end of the service, I went to take my customary place at the head of the little casket. Standing in this needy place, I often hug family and friends, particularly at a child's funeral. There is no kind of occasion that more elicits tears and....

The three worlds in one - the world that was, the world that is, and the world that will be - are described for us in the third chapter of Peter's second letter: This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you, in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance, that ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior; knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from...

Happy Resurrection Day! And Happy 5th Birthday to Cross Church this morning! In fact, let's all say, ''Happy Birthday, Cross Church'' together on the count of three. This one-day set aside to center in on the resurrection is an unusual happy day. We celebrate it with pastel colors and feature opportunities for children to play. Everything around this holiday is built to celebrate and communicate hope, joy, and happiness. But you have to really search for it because you have move beyond the barnacles that have grown around the day of eggs, bunnies, and chocolate to find the granite behind for lasting happiness. Since the year 325, Easter has been observed on the first Sunday after the full moon following...

I heard about a dad who went into his five year old boy's room and noticed he was drawing a picture so he ask what he was drawing. The little boy said, ''Well, I'm drawing a picture of God.'' The dad said, ''Well, son, no one really knows what God looks like.'' The little boy confidently looked up at his dad and said, ''Well they will when I get done.'' That's my real hope that by the time we are done with this series we'll all have a clearer picture of who God is and what He wants to do in our lives. That's why I'm starting a new series today that I'm calling God Cubed, Exploring the Trinity. The word trinity comes from a combination...

A five-year-old had one line in a kindergarten Christmas playlet, appearing in an angel's garb to say, "I bring you good tidings!" After many rehearsals, the lad asked his mother what were "tidings." She explained tidings were news. The performance began and the little angel became flustered. After a long embarrassing silence, he blurted out, "Hey, I got news for you!" Gabriel's visit to Mary was for the purpose of issuing the Heavenly Fathers invitation. The things the angel said were filled with hope for Mary as well as for the world. Listen to the phrases the angel used for it give us a clue to God's way of thinking when He...

I read a story from the famous Danish Philosopher/Theologian from the mid-1860, Soren Kierkegaard that helps us to understand this text. A prince wanted to find a young lady suitable to be his queen. He had traveled all over the kingdom looking and hoping to find the ideal mate that would be the ideal queen when he reached the throne. One day he was on an errand for his father that required him to pass through the local village. This village was one of the poorest villages near the royal palace. As he passed thru, he happened to glance out of the window of his carriage and saw the most beautiful young lady he had...

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth…and from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:14, 16-17 PRAY VIDEO: The Skinny on Truth and GraceThat's the essence of this entire series; to "act" more like Jesus. Of course, you've already heard me say that you can't "act" like Jesus if you're not abiding in Him and letting His Words abide in you. And that is accomplished by spending time with Him in prayer and in His Word....

There are so many names given to Jesus in the Bible. Each name of Jesus is a lesson to us about how Jesus relates to us, about his care for us, about his ability and about his power and his might. It gives us insight into the character and the nature of Jesus and who Jesus really is. Well, let's go to the Lord in prayer and then we will look at the titles of Jesus in the verse here before us, Isaiah 9:6. Father, how we thank you for Jesus. We know that throughout the word that he is called so many things to us, the Rose of Sharon, the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star, the Alpha, the Omega, the Beginning and the End. Father, we...

Today we begin 1 Corinthians 8. The first verse says, ''Now about food sacrificed to idols.'' I know what you're thinking. ''It's about time we talk about something relevant to my life! We're finally getting to a topic that I need answers to.'' Some of you woke up this morning wondering, ''Can I eat meat sacrificed to an idol or not?'' You've been waiting years for this question to be addressed in church. Well, maybe not. At first glance, you might think there's no way this text applies to you. That's why I entitled this message 'More Than Meats the Eye'. I promise if you'll stick with me and listen closely there are some very relevant and very...

What does it mean to be free? Are there limits to our freedoms? How do we balance our individual freedoms with the greater community and nation of which we belong to? These are not always easy to answer. And when these issues get ''messy, they sometimes end up in a court of law. As Christians living in these United States we have dual freedoms, we have freedoms as citizens of the United States and we have spiritual freedom from the tyranny and power of sin. Through the cross where sin was paid for, we have freedom in Christ! Life Application: Exercising our Christian freedom can sometimes be ''messy'' because more often...

''How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.'' (John 10:24 NRSV). It seems like a fair question, doesn't it? Why shouldn't God make himself clear to us? Why are there so many religions? Why do we have to guess which ones are true? Why doesn't God do something so stupendous that there would be no doubt in anyone's mind about God's existence? Why doesn't Jesus appear in this sanctuary right now so our eyes could see him and so that every one us would put our complete faith in him? Tell us plainly, show us clearly, make it obvious! Jesus replied to his questioners by telling them...

One of the War’s most intriguing figures to me has always been the Union’s General-in-Chief, George McClellan. On paper, President Lincoln couldn’t have hoped for a better general. They called him “The Young Napoleon” because he possessed an incredibly strategic mind. He was the youngest member ever to be accepted to the U.S. Military Academy (at age 1 5 — I’m sure he was homeschooled) and he graduated top of his class ... (only reason he missed top spot: sup par sketching skills) -Excellent recruiter; when he came on board, he increased the volunteers for the army by 300% in 4 months -Troops loved him...

I love services that include baptisms. Baptism is one of the most central and important steps of our faith journey that we see biblically. For over two thousand years, followers of Jesus have been getting baptized...Baptism not only links us historically with the early church, but even earlier in the Old Testament, as we see that God has used water to effect miracles and illustrate spiritual truths....We see that in the story of Noah and referenced in 1 Peter 3:20-21 1 Peter 3:20-21 (NASB95) 20who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is...

INTRO: Paul knew he was about to die and these are his last words. He gives us some snapshots or minibiographies of some of the people he labored with that might be instructive to us. I. DEMAS - NO ONE OF US EVER GETS BEYOND WORLDLINESS. Worldliness is an attitude or philosophy of wanting to blend in with the world - to lose your identity as a Christian. Demas is mentioned three times in the bible. First, as "my fellow servant" in Philemon 24, then just as "Demas" in Col. 4:13 to this passage in II Tim. 4:10 ". forsaken me, having loved this present world." Demas went to Thessolanica to blend in--not to forsake the Lord...

There are some things you just cannot do without. The obvious physical necessities of life include food and water, light, and air. Most of us could miss a few meals and still make it for quite a while, but without air we'd all be dead in minutes. But what are the spiritual necessities? What are the spiritual things we must live and breathe or we die? According to the Bible there are three we must have to survive. They are faith, hope, and love. Do you have all three in abundance? God desires that you do! We don't have them for sale this morning. They cannot be bought with money, but they do last forever! The next three weeks...

Biblical illiteracy is widespread in our country as many people have never gone to church and know nothing about the Bible. A mother in Norwood, Missouri told how she sent her12 year-old son to church with a neighbor for the first time. He came home and told her that ''they believe that one guy made everything.'' As she questioned him further it became apparent that for the first time in his life he had heard about God as creator. Life has really changed since the days of the early pioneers when most people knew about God. When these pioneers traveled through Canada along one river they saw the water rush through a chasm...

Amen. I tell you what, that is marvelous and wonderful what Jesus is to us, thank you so much for helping us to worship today in music. Take God's word please and turn with me to Ephesians chapter one. 'This is a Thanksgiving message. The title of our message today is PRAISE TO THE TRINITY. Let me give you a secret friend. The secret of everything, really when you get to the bottom line is just praise. That's what we're going to do in all eternity, we're going to in all eternity, we're going to praise the Lord. That's why we're saved, so we can praise him and worship him and sometimes if your prayers get dry, begin to...

I remember several years ago, the hometown of actress Lucille Ball had a massive 400-pound statue made in her honor and they placed it in a prominent spot within the city park. If you're a bit on the younger side and don't recognize the name Lucille Ball, here's her picture. (show pic) She was a beautiful woman and phenomenal comedic actress. You can still watch reruns of 'I Love Lucy'. But a problem arose. When people of her hometown saw the bronze statue there was a massive outcry. They hated it. They wanted it removed immediately. They wrote letters city officials, started petitions, and even had a dedicated Facebook page...
