As you're turning to 1 Corinthians 10 know this: Learning from those who have gone before you will save you a lot of trouble. Last week a section of Burnt Hickory was closed off for repairs. Well, I had forgot it and was on my way home, when suddenly, I came upon that closed section. I was detoured to Stilesboro then to Barrett Parkway and then to Dallas Highway and what should have taken about 15 minutes took 45 minutes. When I finally arrived home, do you want to guess what the first thing was that I talked to Julie about? The detour! I wanted her to know why I was late and why I might seem a little flustered, but also...

Open Bibles to 1 Corinthians 10. Have you ever heard of a marathon where 5,000 people started the race, but only one finished the entire race and got the prize? It happened two years ago in Sunderland, England. It was a race called The Marathon of the North. What happened was the second and third place runners lost sight of the first-place runner who was following the lead vehicle that that ensured they went the right route. Incredibly, the second and third place runners took a wrong turn, and led the other 4,997 contestants the wrong way. By the time it was discovered, it was too late. Every runner except the leader ran...

Now take God's word and join me in the New Testament book of 1 Corinthians chapter 10. We're learning these days what it means to stand on the promises of God. Remember from last time together: By FOCUSING on the promises we can then FOLLOW the promises and it's FAITH that makes it all happen! When it comes to the promises of God, we need to learn more about Standing, Listening and Resting!''Standing on the promises we cannot fall, Listening every moment to the Spirit's call, Resting in my Savior as my all in all, Standing on the promises of God.'' Vance Havner was correct when he said, ''We're...

Introduction: Paul had just warned everyone about the pitfalls of self confidence and lack of self control. His audience may have been struggling as to how not to follow in the footsteps of the Jews and their notable sins. Paul is now going to offer them an encouraging word on how to deal with temptation that is going to come their way. In our text today we will discuss the reality of temptation and the reliance that God offers us to overcome it. The Corinthians may have been struggling with numerous questions pertaining sin, idols, fornication, murmuring, immorality, and an assortment of other personal and social issues...

ESV Psalm 145:16 You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.Intro: Well, Christmas was yesterday. It finally came. We spent weeks getting ready for it. We spent tons of money paying for it. We wrote our lists of what we wanted. We eagerly anticipated getting the one gift that we really wanted this year. We had great expectations of what Christmas morning was going to be like, our kids wide eyed as they looked under the tree on Christmas morning, parents smiling as their kids screamed and squeeled at the presents that they had spent so much time and money and love picking out.Well, are you...

1 Cor. 6:12-Paul said: ''Everything is permissible for me-but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me-but I will not be mastered by anything.'' 1.0 Food is Not Our Master! Jesus is! To be mastered means: to be brought under the power of; to be enslaved by; dominated by; or something makes free with you. Food addiction is real. According to Food Addicts Anonymous, there are four areas the symptoms of addiction show up. A) Physical Symptoms You've started using laxatives, diuretics, or vomiting to avoid weight gain after eating a lot. You keep searching and trying different diets; but to no avail. Story: The boy...

Turn to 1 Cor. 6:12-20. Getting people to be obsessed with the look, size, and feel of their body is a multi, multi, multi-billion-dollar business. You and I are constantly being reminded that our bodies aren't what they could be. And because our body is never far from our mind, we often fall for it. We buy what they're selling. Dolly Parton said, ''''If I see something sagging, dragging, or bagging, I get it sucked, tucked, or plucked. It takes a lot of money to look as cheap as I do.'' At least Dolly is honest about it. Some may ask: ''Is God all that concerned about the use and the condition of it? Isn't God really just after our eternal soul...

Lawn Chair Larry: According to published reports, Larry Walters was employed as a truck driver in Southern California. On July 2, 1982, he fastened 42 surplus balloons to a lawn chair and launched from his girlfriend's San Pedro home. He carried various supplies with him as well as a CB radio and a BB gun to shoot balloons one at a time to descend. He didn't realize how powerful the buoyancy of the balloons was. When he cut a rope holding him to the ground, he took off with such a jolt that another anchor rope broke under the stress and he shot upward so quickly that his eyeglasses flew to the ground...

I want to talk with you this morning about a controversial subject - the use of alcohol. I want to make what I have to say as clear as I possibly can. I don't want anybody to miss the message - especially I want boys and girls to understand. I heard about a Sunday School teacher who was trying to speak to her boys and girls on the evils of alcohol. She brought in a jar filled with alcohol and some worms. She said, ''Boys and girls, look at this.'' She took the worms and dropped them down in the alcohol and the worms immediately died. She said, ''Now children, what lesson does that teach you?'' One little boy raised his hand and...

A man and his wife on a strict diet, sat down at the table for a meatless meal, all steamed and all green. He looked at what was before him and said, ''You say the blessing. If I thank the Lord for this He'll know I'm lying!'' We are in Thanksgiving week. A week sanctioned and scheduled by the government. But there is a divinely scheduled Thanksgiving Day. Does anyone know when it is? It's today-and tomorrow, and the next day. Daniel 6:20 says, ''Daniel was on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God.'' Everyday was Thanksgiving for Daniel, and should be for us as well. Colossians 3:15 says, ''And be thankful…''...

12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 23All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. 24Let no man seek his own, but every man another's. 25Whatsoever is sold in the marketplace, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake: 26For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof. 27If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. 28But if any man...

Proverbs 25:27-28 It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to seek one's own honor. 28 Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control. Charlie Shed has a book called ''Devotion For Dieters'', and in it he has a letter that has been written to him. ''Dear Dr. Shed: I have been reading your book, The Fat Is In Your Head, and I wonder if you have any special advice for me in my situation. I have three children, twin boys who are five, and a daughter who is almost three (thank heaven, isn't two the most awful age?). I am married to a man I love. He has a good job, and we like where we...

That cute little poem sums up the problem with the people Sodom. Ezekiel 16:50 tells us ''They were haughty.'' They thought they had ''THE GOODS'' and so they were tried to roar because they felt superior. But like the rabbit in the woods... they paid a terrible price. God destroyed them. Now, ''haughty'' is an interesting word. We often use it without giving much thought to what it actually means. So I did a study of the Hebrew word used here in Ezekiel and I found that it was a pronounced 'gaw-bah' and that it meant - ''Lofty'', ''High'', ''Exalted.'' As I researched how this word was used in the Old Testament I ran across...

The Lord had blessed the children of Israel in many wonderful ways. They had indeed been a blessed people. God was giving them a land, a Promised Land. They were getting ready to go into the land of Canaan. God had given them a land. God has given them a law, the Ten Commandments, and the ramifications of those Ten Commandments. God has given them a land. God has given them the law. Of course, God gave them Himself. The Lord says, "I'm going to go with you into that land." There are tremendous blessings that God gave to them. The Bible is a real book about real people living...
