As you know, we've been looking at the book of Nehemiah these past weeks, but we're going to deviate today, because the Lord has really burdened my heart about the need for all of us, all of us Christians, both individually and as a body, to get humble before God, and seek Him more than we ever have in the past. I really sense that we as a church, need to be seeking Him concerning the unity of Spirit in our church, and I really sense that we must be seeking Him concerning getting active in reaching our community, which means, we need to be seeking Him in how He wants us to be about fulfilling our mission as His...

I'm going to ask you to take an imaginary journey with me, back in time to approximately 500 years before the Lord Jesus Christ was born. That means we are going back in time about 2500 years to a land known as the land of Babylon. It is modern Iraq, but in those days it was Babylon. Babylon, the fountainhead of all idolatry. Babylon, the origination of every germ of evil teaching. Babylon, where the children of God-the Jews-were in the land of captivity. There are six books in the Old Testament which have to do with the Jews being in captivity in Babylon. Three of those books are in the historical section of your Bible-Ezra, Nehemiah...

Introduction: I want you to affirm two statements with me tonight. Both are very important. Repeat after me: "I believe in God." That's good! I trust that all of you meant that sincerely. That is the proper beginning spot. Now the second statement. The harder one. Repeat after me again, "I am not God." That may seem a bit silly, but it is very important. Oliver Wendell Holmes was right when he once said, "The great act of faith is when a man decides that he is not God." ( O. W. Holmes, Jr., to William James, quoted in The Practical Cogitator. Christianity Today, Vol. 33, no. 16.). I seriously doubt that many of us go through life actually...

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and [put it] also in writing, saying, The book of Ezra covers 2 distinct time periods. The first 6 chapters cover the 23 years from the edict of Cyrus to the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem (538-515 BC) Chapters 7-10 deal with the events after Ezra returned from Babylon (458 BC). Chapter 4 contains an event which refers to the reign of king Artaxerxes. Ezra was also a contemporary of Nehemiah...

At first glance it would appear that Nebuchadnezzar would destroy Tyre and before fulfillment, anyone would be confident in predicting how this event would transpire. However, history unveiled this prophecy quite differently than the neat packaging methods that many prophecy experts use today. God did not promise Nebuchadnezzar that he would overthrow Tyre. The first proclamation of this judgment says that many nations will come against it. Tyre was a very wealthy and very wicked seaport city. Tyre was also so wicked that God called Satan the king of Tyre. It was beautiful and great in splendor on the surface but vile and corrupt to the core and they were lifted up with pride against God. Just as....

"...offered freely for the House of God to set it up in his place" (2:68). Cyrus, King of Persia, has let the people voluntarily return to their homeland to rebuild the house of God. Cyrus' conquest of Babylon brought him in contact with David who evidently introduced him to Isaiah's prophetic writing which motivated him to let the people return. Not all the slaves offered their freedom consented to go. Many did not want to relinquish their property. Those stirred and moved to sacrifice for their God did not return. Gifts are symptoms of a loving, submissive spirit. Refusal to give is also a symptom. They stayed or went...

AUTHORSHIP: Ezra is the author and central character of this book. Ezra 7:10 gives his keynote message. THEME: The return of God's people from Exile in Babylon, the restoration of Jerusalem and the Temple, and the confirmation that God's people, the Jews, were His chosen ones to bring the Messiah to the world. PROPHETIC Significance: In Jeremiah 29:10, God prophesied the Jews would return to their homeland after 70 years. Ezra shows how God kept His word! Of course, this means that God will keep His Word to us today as well.DATE: 458BC STRUCTURE OF THE BOOK OF EZRA: Part I - The Return under...

Today I want to raise the question, "Why will there be war till Christ returns? And why is the U. N. a failure?"God has the answer in the Bible. God gives to us His plan for a warless world. I want to present to you Ezra 9, verse 7, where we read these words: "For our iniquities have we been delivered to the sword, to captivity, to spoil, and to confusion of face as it is this day." There is the tremendous statement of Ezra, the priest in Israel, and a confession of their sins. And it is just as true today of America as it was of Israel back in those days. For OUR iniquities have WE been delivered to the sword, to captivity, to the spoil and...

A. If I were to ask you to raise your hand today in answer to the question, ''do you love god,'' probably everyone in here would raise his hand. 1. What does it mean to really love god? 2. Love is a word we toss around rather loosely.3. When you really love someone there are certain things you love about that person and there are certain things you are willing to do because of your love.B. Today, I am beginning a month-long series on ''because i love god I will love...C. The place where we will start is his word.1. When you love God you will love and trust in what he says. 2. Turn in your bibles to the book of ezra. I want to read from...

It's hard to know who to trust right now. There are lots of differing opinions from experts on what we should have done, what we should be doing now and what in the world will we do when we come out of this crisis. There is definitely One whom you can trust and that's God. Let's take a look at three reasons why we can trust God right now to find encouragement and hope. 1. Trust God because He fulfills His Promises. As the Israelites sit in exile in Babylon, God is moving to free them from their bondage and to fulfill His promise from the prophet Jeremiah. In Ezra 1:1 we read, ''In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by...

Here in Ezra 7 we finally get to see Ezra himself on the scene coming back to Jerusalem. At this particular point in history, God had chosen Ezra to bring the people back to the Scriptures. Ezra is going to lead a spiritual renewal through the study of God's Word and Worship. What we see here are God's highest priorities for His people Word and Worship and having this foundation will guide the Israelites as they rebuild their country and society. These are still God's highest priorities for us today. But some may ask, ''What about my family, my work, my friends, my neighbors and my community? There are some other really important...
