ELIJAH SERMON OUTLINES

1. As we have traveled with Elijah, we have been to the brook Cherith and Zarephath. In this study we find ourselves on the road again with Elijah. Our destination is Mount Carmel. The village of Carmel is located in the tribal territory assigned to Judah (Josh. 15:55). King Saul set up a monument in Carmel after a defeat of the Amalekites in the area (1 Sam. 15:12). There Nabal disrespected David and his men (1 Sam. 25:2-40). 2. The name "Carmel" means "garden, fruitful." Mount Carmel was known as a place of great beauty and fertility. The Easton's Bible Dictionary says, "No mountain in or around Palestine retains its ancient beauty...

INTRODUCTION: Elijah was God's prophet to the Northern Kingdom of Israel. His story is one of the most intriguing stories in the Bible. He was a miracle worker; he raised the dead, called fire down from heaven, brought a 3-year drought, called for rain and God brought the rain. When he left this life he went out in a blaze of glory; God took him to heaven in a fiery chariot. It says in 2 Kings 2:11b, "Behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them[he and Elisha] both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven." Ahab was king of Israel at the time...he was a wicked king. He had turned the hearts of...

Elijah and his prophecies are catapulted on the stage of history without prelude or introduction. All we are told is that Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, stood before Ahab, king of Israel, and said, ''As the Lord God of Israel liveth before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years; but according to my word.'' Seed which is sown today does not come to the harvest today, but tomorrow. The apostasy of Jeroboam, who made Israel to sin, bore its evil harvest in the days of King Ahab, when the religion of Jehovah was proscribed and there was an altar to Baal on every high hill and under every green tree. Elijah's...

These were terrible times in Israel a nation that had been so wondrously and gloriously touched by God. However, they had turned to idolatry and now they had an extremely wicked king who leads the entire nation astray. (I kings 16:30-33 So God sent a message to the king of Israel through Elijah the prophet. I Kings 17:1 Elijah is one of the most colorful personalities found in the entire Bible. Here in 1 Kings Chapter 17, he appears suddenly upon the scene, he doesn't have a huge introduction, and not a lot is said about his life previous to here in this passage. He comes on the scene during some of Israel's most troubling...

What is the spiritual journey like? Are you still on yours? If you're looking for easy answers about the spiritual life, the Bible's not your book. Better that you shop at the self-help section of the nearest book store. There you can find books whose cover show smiling authors beaming with the glow of success, health, and wealth. Their books outline three or five or seven steps to the blessed life which you are sure to find if you follow their advice. The Bible isn't such a book, and the Elijah story is a good example of this key truth: your spiritual journey might become more difficult than you ever expected it to become. So said it Elijah in verse 4: He...

We have been asking to be energized as we wait upon the Lord with prayer, fasting and expectation. Being energized by the Spirit prepares us for our future, every step, every door, every surprise. As we journey, there are times when being energized by God is our only hope to get through our seasons of life and stay on mission. Today we delve into a character who models a journey marked by an encounter that pushed him through. INTRODUCTION ENERGIZED ''Energized:'' God revealing Himself by His Spirit to our spirit for the specific purpose of encouraging, enabling and energizing us. God wants you to be energized by a new...

We have all heard people claim to speak for God. We have heard people claim to have heard God speak to them. The Bible is full of such stories. It speaks of many prophets, or spokesmen, for God. It also speaks of false prophets and those who would claim a word from God, when that word in not one that comes from God. The Apostle Paul claims at times to speak for God, at times for himself, and at times seemingly unsure whether his message is of God or is his own. When we hear different messages that purport to be from God, how do we discern God's voice from those voices that only purport to be from God? There is a little story in the...

INTRO. There comes sometimes in the life of every Christian when he must find the spiritual strength and courage to stand alone and do the will of God. Such a man was Elijah. The Bible calls him a Tishmite. We know nothing of his mother or of his father, in fact, we're not even sure where Tishba was. But god had prepared his heart and raised him up for this hour of need in the life of God's people. The name of Elijah and its meaning in Hebrew tells us much about a mother and father though they remain nameless. His name ''Elijah'' meant ''my God is Jehovah.'' This rough-hewn man who has been called God's answer to...

It is of the deepest interest to discover what was the common impression about Jesus, and in this report conveyed by the disciples we get a hint of the utmost value. "Whom do men say that I am?" said Jesus; and the answer was, "Some say John the Baptist; but others-and probably the greater number-think Thou art Elijah or Jeremiah come to earth again." Now there are many interesting suggestions in these answers; but one of them to my mind overtops all the others. Did you ever think of the vast difference there was between the characters of Elijah and Jeremiah? Yet some said about Christ, "This is Elijah," and others said...

I am grateful for the opportunity to share in this special occasion. I have long respected the work of Central Christian College. I especially value the opportunity I have had for the last few years to work in the class room. I have never failed to be impressed with the caliber of students I meet here. I often feel like that Grandpa who was shaving one morning as his grandson looked on. Out of the blue the little lad asked, "Did God make you, Grandpa?" "Yes, God made me," the grandfather answered. The boy thought for a while. A few minutes later, he asked, "Did God make me too?" "Yes, He made you too," Granddad replied. The little...

We continue our series of messages on Bible Giants, sermons from the Old Testament books of history. Today we will look at the prophet Elijah. He was one of the greatest of all the Old Testament characters. As you are turning to the text I want to share a story I read. A husband and wife were celebrating their thirtieth wedding anniversary and their sixtieth birthdays at the same time. After all the guests had left and they were cleaning up after the celebration, they were standing in the kitchen and a genie suddenly appeared. He told them both that they could have one wish. The wife quickly said, "I want to travel the world," and...

This evening we are looking at one of my favorite passages in all of the Bible. Let me introduce to you the three main characters. These are three of the most familiar characters in all of the Old Testament. First of all Ahab, who is the king of Israel. He is described for us in chapter 16, verse 30, when we are told that he did evil above all the kings that were before him. R. G. Lee, the great preacher of Memphis, Tennessee, a number of years ago, introduced Ahab this way. He called him that vile toad who sat upon the throne of Israel. The second character is familiar also, Jezebel. A name that is famous in Bible history. Jezebel is the wife...

INTRO: We live in a world where nobody likes to take a stand. Politicians like to ride the fence on issues, they will say things like: "I am personally opposed to abortion, but I don't want to inflict my views on others" ... translation -- they are for it while being against it! Sadly we live in a time when too many religious leaders are doing the same thing; they won't take stands on issues of sin for fear of offending society and being chastised by the press as old fashion and out of style. They are afraid they will be rejected if they take a stand and speak the truth. Our young people are being told that nothing anymore is really wrong, just be...

INTRODUCTION: The story of the translation of Elijah is a thrilling account of God removing one of His faithful servants to glory. Of course, there is nothing unusual about God taking one of His saints home--we are all going home to be with the Lord someday. However, what makes this story so interesting is that Elijah had not yet died. He went to heaven in his physical body--he was translated or as we would say, "he was raptured." The word "rapture," is from the Latin word "rapio," meaning "to seize" or to be "caught up." One day all the saints will be caught up to be with Christ. In II Kings 2:16, the Bible says that the sons of...

''The question is not where is the God of Elijah, but where are the Elisha's of God!!!''Trust in God's Power Preserves Austrian Town from Napoleon Napoleon's army was camped on the hills above the border town of Feldkirch, Austria poised to attack. On Easter Sunday morning, the citizens met to decide whether to try to defend themselves or surrender. The pastor rose and addressed the frightened people and said, ''Friends, we have been counting on our own strength, and apparently that has failed. Since this is the day of our Lord's resurrection, let us just ring the bells, have our services, and leave the matter in His hands....

These were terrible times in Israel for they had an extremely wicked king who leads the entire nation astray. They wanted God but they wanted their idols as well. But God does not tolerate this kind of behavior and so God had to punish their sin. God sent a message to the King And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand; there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. The drought was for three and half years. The heavens were as brass--no rain fail! No dew came! The grass of the field began to wither and die. The crops began...

Elijah, like John the Baptist, is one of the greatest men of the Bible, and one of the loneliest. Except for a brief period at the end of his life when Elisha was with him, we never see Elijah in the company of other men. He had no companions, no fellow worker, none to cheer or encourage him. Only twice in his history do we behold him in any close human relationship - once with the widow of Zarephath who entertained him, and once with Elisha. Like the great prophet who was to come, Elijah trod the wine press alone. Elijah comes upon the stage of Israel's history like a flash of lightning. Great men are the inspired text of the...
