Christ Alone
by Stephen Whitney
The Wittenberg church in Germany where Luther had posted his Ninety-five Theses held one of Europe's largest collections of religious artifacts or holy relics which were preserved as memento or souvenir of a saint. Usually they were a bone or some part of their clothing by which the person was remembered. These had been piously collected by Prince Frederick III, who was the ruler over Germany. By 1509 Frederick had collected over 5,000 relics which allegedly included vials of milk from the virgin Mary, straw from the manger of Jesus and the body of one of the baby boys killed by King Herod. The relics were...
Jesus Alone
by Donald Cantrell
I live in North Georgia and if I want to go to Atlanta, Georgia I can get there through numerous routes. I could simply go to Dalton, Georgia and get on I-75 and drive due south and be in Atlanta in less than 90 minutes. I could drive east and get on I-575 in Ellijay and travel south and arrive in Atlanta in less than 2 ½ hours. I could go to Chattanooga, Tennessee and buy a plane ticket and arrive in Atlanta whenever the airline could get me there. In all honesty there are an unending variety of routes I could take to arrive in Atlanta. We live in an age where people think they can get to heaven the same as going to Atlanta. People...
Life-Saving Station (3 of 11)
by Dave Gustavsen
There's a legendary story about a little life-saving station on a dangerous stretch of coast, where there were a lot of shipwrecks. And this little life-saving station was really no more than a hut. They only had one boat. And there were a few highly-devoted members who constantly kept watch over the sea. They took turns going out into the ocean-sometimes at great risk to themselves-and they went looking for the lost. And over time, some of the people who were rescued, and various other people who lived in the area, wanted to be associated with this station. So they volunteered their time, and they gave their money to help support...
Gospel Centrality
by Jason Dees
So our scripture reading for today is from Romans 1:16-17:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ''The righteous shall live by faith.'' In December of 405 AD the Rhine River froze. And on December 31 405 a group of vandals, barbarians, Visigoths, successfully crossed the Rhine River... Now Rome as it was known wouldn't officially fall for another 70 years when the last Roman Emperor Romulus was deposed by the Barbarians but it was...
The Gospel of Jesus
by Jerry Watts
Jesus came to earth to bring us the ''Gospel of the Kingdom.'' Since the word 'gospel' means 'good news', it is safe to say that Jesus came to earth to bring us the 'good news about the Kingdom of heaven.'' It might be better to say that ''Jesus came to be the good news.'' His words echo throughout the centuries and through our minds, ''I am the way, the truth, and the life'' and John's gospel says, ''In Him was Life.'' What a statement and confirmation. Jesus goes on to say, ''I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly or 'to the fullest.' Jesus brings us life because Jesus IS life. However, this truth is being...
God's Household under and for the Gospel (30 of 44)
by Patrick Edwards
Introduction: The wise modern lyricist Paul Hewson once wrote, ''a house doesn't make a home.'' Now if you're trying to figure out who Paul Hewson is, you mostly likely know him not by his proper name but by the stage name he goes by: Bono of the band U2. Bono quotes the well-known saying in the band's 2004 Grammy award-winning single, ''Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own.'' It's a song that he wrote about his father and the struggles that the two had experienced in their relationship as father and son. It's sad, but so often husbands and fathers believe their sole duty is to provide physically for their families...
Jesus' Mission
by Robert Dawson
One of the Christmas classics that finds its way onto most TV sets during the Christmas season is the 1946 classic It's a Wonderful Life starring Jimmy Stewart. In the movie Jimmy Stewart has the unique opportunity to see what life would have been like without him. The main point is that each person's life impacts everybody else's. Had that person never been born there would be gaping holes left by their absence. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus this month what would the world look like if He had never been born? What kind of gaping holes would that leave? What kind of impact would it have? Some people have...
Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners
by Robert Walker
On the museum wall of the concentration camp at Dachau is a large and moving photograph of a mother and her little girl standing in line for the gas chamber. The child, who is walking in front of her mother, does not know where she's going. The mother, following behind, looks knowingly but is helpless to stop the tragedy. In her helplessness, she performs the only act of love left to her. She places her hands over the child's eyes so she will at least not see the horror to come. When people come to the museum, most don't whisk by this photo hurriedly. Instead, they pause and almost feel the pain. Deep inside, they say to...
Series: Why Christ Came
by Stuart Briscoe
The fact of Christ's coming is more or less accepted by most people. But the significance of the event is largely lost on people. That He came "to save sinners" is the burden of our study today. The Meaning of It All. A. The meaning of "sinner."Note: Paul says he is No. 1. (Gk. "protos") v. 151. One who acts ignorantly. v 13 2.One who acts injuriously. v. 13 3 One who acts injudiciously. 4 One who acts indifferently. B. The meaning of "sin."1. A defilement that needs cleansing. 2. A disease that needs curing. 3. A dynamic that needs conquering. C. The meaning of "salvation."1. Deliverance from sin's contamination...
Trusting in God Alone
by Jerry Vines
Let's talk a little bit about how trouble relates to the Christian life. Bro. Dawson and I were visiting in the home of a young couple the other week. We were talking about the Christian life. I said to them that the Christian life begins with the supernatural birth. You invite the Lord Jesus into your heart and you are instantaneously born into the family of God. But a Christian life continues by growth. God's design, God's purpose for everyone who is saved is that they grow and develop and become the mature, full grown Christian that God intends. One of the ingredients God uses in the process of helping us to grow and...
Never Alone (6 of 14)
by Keith Krell
Hezekiah 6:1 says, "God helps those who help themselves." Can I get an amen? Perhaps a "Preach it, brother?" No? Why not?! "This is not a biblical citation," you reply. You are correct. Despite what many Christians think, "God helps those who help themselves" is likely the most often quoted phrase that isn't in the Bible. This saying is usually attributed to Ben Franklin, quoted in Poor Richard's Almanac (1757). Franklin and his contemporaries adapted it from one of Aesop's Fables—Hercules and the Waggoner (6th century BC). In the story, a waggoner's heavy load becomes bogged down in mud. In despair, the waggoner...
A Good Soldier of Jesus Christ
by Stan Coffey
Today we are talking about ''A Good Soldier of Jesus Christ.'' In the scripture, the Bible has much to say about the Christian life in terms of military service. The apostle Paul wrote about the things that he knew and he used those things to illustrate the Christian life. He knew about athletics because in Paul's world they had a great deal of athletics just as we do today. They had the Olympian games. The forerunner of the Olympian games took place in the Mediterranean world in cities like Ephesus, cities in Asia-Minor, in Turkey and so he knew about the javelin throw and he spoke of the Christian life in terms...
The People of the Church - Part 4 (4 of 10)
by Ernest Easley
We're thinking these days about our CHURCHLIFE and what it means to be a church member. So, what is the condition of the church today? Would you say that it's striving and thriving or would you say that it's limping and lagging? You say, "Pastor, it looks to me that the church is more limping and lagging than striving and thriving." All right. So why is that? You say, "Well, it's just the times we're living in. Our nation is morally bankrupt and more secular. We Christians are facing more and more persecution. It's just harder to be a Christian today than it was when I was growing up."So you're saying that the church is...
What Am I Supposed to Do? (3 of 3)
by Jason Dees
2 Corinthians 5:17-21Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might...
Can God Really Use Me? (6 of 7)
by Lenny Ports
God is using you. You don’t have to be credentialed just called which you are. You don’t have to be a veteran just available. Your equipment is not in the flesh but in the power of the Spirit. When you were saved you became a new creation in Christ. That means that who you were is no longer alive because the new creation of you is alive. You no longer live for you but for Him. You not only live for Him but you live in Him and He lives in you by the Holy Spirit. Christ’s intention in saving you was to convert you from living for yourself to living for God. And by virtue of you living for God, you live in a new way because His life is now moving...
