I want to try to share with you the message I believe God has for us in this brief little letter. I John was written to a group of Christians. II John was written to a Christian woman and her children. III John was written to an individual Christian. As you read the little book of III John you will notice that there are three church members given to us in these verses. The message is going to be built around our studies of these three church members. The first one is in verse 1 - a man named Gaius. The second one is in verse 9 - a man named Diotrephes. The third one is in verse 13 - a man named Demetrius. These are not the kind of names...

GOOD ol' Charlie Brown's young friend, Linus, once aired a view shared by many. He had just told his big sister Lucy that he wanted to be a doctor when he grew up. (You may remember that it was Linus who once said that big sisters are ''the crab grass in the lawn of life.'') Lucy couldn't believe her ears. ''You a doctor! That's a laugh! You could never be a doctor! You know why? Because you don't love mankind!'' Immediately, young Linus countered, ''I do too love mankind! It's people I can't stand!'' Indeed, if it weren't for people, this world would be an almost perfect place. Eliminate the people and the problems will soon...

Series Introduction: We are in a series through the shortest books of the New Testament; we are calling the series Subscribing to Truth. The Apostles maintained a relationship with the Christians in the churches they planted in various areas through a steady stream of letters, through which the lead and coached the congregation in the truth. In much the same way that we attempt to coach you through the week through blogs, podcast, emails, etc. Some of their letters were quite long, those where often dictated to a scribe by the Apostle. Others were quite short, not much longer than the average blog. Typically they were written...

1 The elder unto the well beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. This third epistle carries with it the same themes that were expressed in the first 2 epistles. John's children were being invaded with the problem of false doctrines and false teachers within the church. The good news is that the believing body, for the most part, was walking in the truth that they were taught and that brought great joy to his heart as it would the heart of any pastor who teaches the truth. The letter is written to a man named Gaius. There were many men who were names Gaius in scripture, so it would be next to impossible to link his name with those in...

ILLUS: It is said that Dolly Madison, wife of the fourth president of the United States, was one of the most popular women in American history. Wherever she went, she charmed and captivated everyone-obscure and well-known, rich and poor, men and women alike. She was once asked to explain the secret of her power over others. Surprised by the question Mrs. Madison exclaimed, ''Power over people? I have none. I desire none. I merely love everyone.'' Such was not the case with Diotrephes. Diotrephes was a man of selfish pride-a man who desired to have the preeminence and power over people. INTRODUCTION...

If you have your Bible, turn to 3rd John. Third John is the second to the last book of the Bible Third John, Jude, and then the last book, Revelation.Third John is the shortest book in the Greek New Testament. It's not the shortest book in the English because Second John only has 13 verses, and Third John has 14. But in the Greek it is the shortest. And it is an interesting little book. You know, John the apostle, he's called ''the beloved apostle.'' He refers to himself as ''the apostle whom Jesus loved.'' We're going to talk a little bit about that tonight. But he wrote the gospel of John, which is universal. It goes out to everyone. And then...

People write and wish for friends a ''Happy and Prosperous New Year.'' Notice the word wish. We recognize human frailty. We do not say, ''I will make you prosperous in the New Year!'' There is something beyond the writer's control that makes for prosperity in another. If he had control of all things he would make those for whom he cares ''prosperous and happy'' through every day and hour of the New Year. Now, who does control our prosperity''? There are two persons, God and the individual, God and you; God and me. Now God wishes for every human being prosperity and happiness every day of the New Year. In III John 2 He speaks...

THEME: John's third letter is very personal in character and emphasizes the battle for truth within the local church. One of the key words in this letter is witness, 3 John 3, 6 and 12. The word witness is sometimes translated testify and sometimes translated record. Each Christian is a witness, either a good one or a bad one. In this little letter (the shortest New Testament epistle in the original Greek) we read of three individuals who were witnesses in the local church. Two of them were good witnesses, helping the truth, one was a bad witness hindering the truth. This letter pictures an aged apostle concerned about inroads...

John's prayer for his friend Gaius raises an important question. How is the health of your soul? What if our bodies were in the same condition as our souls? What if we paid as much attention to the condition of our bodies that we do to our souls? You do realize the important of your soul's health? Jesus put it bluntly when he said, ''What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul'' (Mk 8:36-37). The Bible comes to the logical conclusion. ''Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise...
