2 Kings: Swing Low, Sweet Chariot! (3 of 10)
by Roger Thomas
Introduction: Our text records the death of Elijah. It is interesting how the prophet's death is so unique yet has become symbolic of every believer's death. We sing the familiar strains of the old spiritual ''Swing Low Sweet Chariot, I looked over Jordan and what did I see, comin' for to carry me home'' often without knowing that it is based on the death of Elijah. Countless old hymns speak of ''crossing Jordan'' as a metaphor of death. That too comes straight out of this text. It is fitting that Elijah's death has become such a familiar symbol for every death. Remember what James said, ''He was a man just like us.'' Maybe so, but his death...
Seeing the Invisible
by Joe Alain
'And Elisha prayed, and said, 'Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.' Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha'' (2 Kings 6:17). When Elisha's servant looked outside the city walls of Dothan the first time, all that he saw was horses of flesh and blood and chariots of iron (2 Kings 6:15). But when he looked the second time, what he saw was horses and chariots of fire! It was the same young man and the same eyes but now his eyes had been opened to the unseen spiritual army of God. This page from the biography of Elisha is a...
Faith for a Miracle (8 of 13)
by Stan Coffey
And our message today is from 2 Kings chapter 4 and we're going to read verses 1-7. Faith for a miracle. God is in the business of miracles. How many of you believe God is in the business of miracles today? Amen? Alright. Jesus is the same, today and forever according to the Bible. So, if he performed miracles when he was here on earth, he performs miracles today. And it's according to our faith, Jesus said, so be it unto you. Faith is expecting the best. Faith is moving against your fear. You remember those eight that we talked about last week. Now, here's the situation in the Old Testament where God performed a miracle for one widow. It's...
Calling God a Liar (3 of 6)
by Jeff Schreve
Well, I heard a story about a police officer. He caught a man speeding and he pulled him over. And he asked the man, he said, ah, "Let me see your license." The man said to him, "I don't have a license. They took it away after my fifth DUI." He said,'Well, let me see the vehicle registration." He said, "I can't show that to you. This isn't my car. I stole it." (laughter) He said, "You stole the car?" He said, "I stole the car." He said, "But I think I saw the vehicle registration in the glove box when I put my gun in there (laughter) after I shot and killed the woman that owns the car." He said, "There's a gun in the glove box?" He said....
Set Your House in Order
by Rex Yancey
2 Chronicles 31:20-21 gives us a background to King Hezekiah. ''And thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah; and he did what was good, right and true before the Lord his God. And every work which he began in the service of the house of God, he did with all his heart and prospered.'' Hezekiah was 25 years old when he became Judah's 13th King. Israel had divided after Solomon. Ten tribes followed Jeroboam. Two tribes had followed Rehoboam. Israel had turned from God and polluted their land with idol worship. Ahaz, Hezekiah's predecessor ''Made high places to burn incense unto other gods, and provoked to anger the Lord...
Extreme Makeover
by Jerry Watts
Most of us have watched, maybe with interest or intrigued, one of the shows which boast of giving an extreme makeover. I say 'one' of the shows because there are several and they makeover people's bodies to people's houses. It would seem that they can take a person, make them look really homey, and then transform them into this ravishing beauty ready for the red carpet. They can take a 57 year old and make her look 37. It reminds me of that old story of the Older Mountain man bringing his family to town for the first time. They walked into a sky-scrapper and were awed by the sight. Mom and the kids were taking in the sights...
Conversation about the Lord Jesus Christ (1 of 3)
by Jesse Hendley
Our subject today is "Conversation About The Lord Jesus Christ." Just "Conversation about Him." The ability to talk about the Lord Jesus Christ. In one of our great denominations there have been many evangelistic conferences, many books being taught on soul winning, and many soul-winning meetings and yet it is estimated that only 4% of the people ever win souls to Jesus or seriously go after souls for the Lord Jesus Christ. There is something tragic about that. There is some reason for this because we believe there are more born-again people who really want to serve the Lord. You can talk about Jesus Christ. You can. It is...
When the Cutting Edge Is Lost
by Samuel Burgess
{Vance Havner said it best when he described the Church this way…} "Many of the Lord's workmen today have lost the 'ax-head' of power. They have lost the joy of Salvation; they have not the upholding of God's Spirit. The loss of the 'ax-head' of the Spirit's unction has fallen into the (waters of worldliness) - (the ponds of indifference) - (the swamps of sluggishness). They have ability, training, sincerity, earnestness, but they are chopping with the handle. They stand before a demonized world powerless, and it must be said of them, as it was said of the disciples before the demon possessed boy, {Mark 9:18}- "and they...
