TEXT: 2 Cor. 3:5, "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God." INTRODUCTION: Beginning with the fall of Satan and his desire to be more than he was, that tendency has been passed on through the sin nature to us. By nature (the sin nature), when given a choice, man tends to think of self first: People today are self-serving, self-dependent; self-righteous...the truth of the matter is that people are pretty much consumed with self. QUOTE: A selfish man once wrote... If I want it, it's mine. If I give it to you and change my mind later, it's mine. If I can take it away from you ...

Today I am going to be referring to many passages of scripture that you might want to jot down in your Bible as we read along because the Bible has a great deal to say about Satan or the devil. Here in II Corinthians 2:11, Paul makes an important statement about the devil. II Corinthians 2:11 - Lest Satan should get an advantage of us for we are not ignorant of his devices. The Bible teaches us that we as Christians ought to be careful because the devil is watching for every opportunity to get advantage. The Bible teaches us that there are three things about which Christians should not be spiritually ignorant. The Bible tells...

Giving has a bad reputation in our churches and in the world today. The most often heard criticism of the church is, "All they talk about is money." If any of you were thinking that, I don't want to disappoint you this morning. Preachers approach their annual stewardship sermons with consternation. They usually begin their sermon with an apology that they have to mention the subject of money again. It is a standing joke that Baptists cannot have a service without taking an offering. One young police recruit who happened to be the son of a Baptist minister, was asked during an examination, "How would...

Let's open in our Bibles to continue our study of James by opening to Hebrews 11. Now isn't that interesting? That should get your attention. We are looking this morning as we continue through the book of James at the attitude that these first century Christians had that made them so powerful. I think that in order to understand the words of James we have to see the background of Hebrews 11 and specifically verse 10. The writer of Hebrews is eloquently writing about the reality of something that those first century saints possessed. They knew that devotion to God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit issued forth into a life of sacrifice...

Twenty-two years ago, about this time of year, our family was getting ready to make a move to Jacksonville, Florida. We were moving to a place where we had never been before. The staff in the church gathered together a variety of materials. They got some brochures which told us a little bit about Jacksonville. They sent us information about...

One of my favorite actors is Tom Hanks. He recently starred in a movie that I have yet to see called Castaway. It is the story of a man who survives a plane crash over the ocean and lands ashore on a deserted island. He spends years there not only trying to survive physically, but primarily emotionally and mentally, as he is totally separated from the outside world. 2. Every person on earth is born a "castaway." We have all crashed landed on an island called sin. Because of our sin we, too, have been separated from God. Isa. 59:2 says, "Your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden...

Introduction: Hard times come. That's a fact of life. But why? Why do we face them? Why some people more than others? People answer those questions in a variety of ways. Some suggest that if God's people suffer hard times, then God has failed. Others suggest that hard times mean we have failed. God is punishing us for some sin. That's what Job's would-be advisors contended. Remember God's response? They don't know what they are talking about, the Creator countered. On the other hand, some argue that we have difficult times because we simply don't have enough of the right kind of faith. If we have enough faith...

I recently read an article about 52-year-old Marshall Edwards of Prestonsburg, Kentucky. Edwards was a successful marathon runner until a car accident left his left leg paralyzed from the knee down. On July 5, 1994, Edwards was driving to work when a drunk and drugged teenager crashed into him at 65 mph. He would spend the next 89 days flat on his back in a hospital bed. He can still walk -- with a severe limp -- but he cannot run. But, instead of allowing the accident to discourage him, he now participates in marathons in the wheelchair competition. In an interview, Edwards said, "You start and say, 'I can do this.' At...
