When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down…and he began to teach them. Thus begins the most famous—and most misunderstood—a sermon in history: the Sermon on the Mount. In three chapters of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus presents a countercultural vision of life as it’s truly meant to be lived. On one level, Jesus is presenting standards that are impossible to live up to. But on another level, he is offering a life that’s within our grasp—if we will choose to embrace a higher kingdom and walk with the King.
