The letter to the Philippians has been called “The Epistle of Joy.” The irony is that Paul wrote this letter from a Roman prison. Philippians reads like an intimate personal letter sent to friends and the Philippian church was dear to Paul’s heart. Although not a perfect church (none exist), the Philippian church was a model church. Generally speaking, the Philippian church was unified in Christ, at peace, generous, accepting (Mostly made up of non-Jewish believers and women had prominent roles), and a model of the Christian life to imitate. It’s no wonder Paul even from prison overflowed with thanksgiving to God, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Phil. 4:4).
