Series: Psalms of the Broken Hearted
Stephen Whitney
Psalm 13
After David killed Goliath he became a national hero and as a result King Saul became jealous of his popularity. Over time Saul grew to hate David and three times tried to kill him, but each time David was one step ahead of him and escaped.
He continued to try and kill David and for 9 years he hunted David as you would hunt a partridge in the mountains (I Sam. 26:20).
Kings liked to hunt a valuable birds for their own pleasure.
Matthew Henry wrote, ''David compares himself to a partridge, an innocent harmless bird, which, when attempts are made upon its life, flies if it can, but makes no resistance.''
Prolonged affliction often wears us out. We want relief, but some things can not be fixed they must be borne by faith that God is working out his plan in our life even though we don't understand why he allows us to go through affliction and suffering.
Chuck Swindoll wrote, ''Take away our hope and we are plunged into deepest darkness . . . stopped dead in our tracks, paralyzed.
Wondering, 'Why?' Asking, 'How much longer? Will this darkness ever end? Does God know where I am?' ''
All believers go through times of frustration because is seems that our prayers are not answered. Sometimes it seems as if God does not know or care about what we are going through. We ask God to intervene because we are hurting emotionally or physically or spiritually, but nothing in our circumstances or life changes.
In spite of our prayers we still continue to suffer with the same problem week after week and month after month. It seems as if God does not care because he does not do anything to help us.
The psalms are filled with statements of hopelessness.
Out of the 150 psalms 62 begin with a statement of despair.
