Temptation (2 of 6)
Series: East of Eden
Zach Terry
Genesis 3:1-9
INTRODUCTION
Beatrice Webb- One of the architect of the modern British welfare system. She and her husband founded the London School of economics. she was a Socialist and an Activist.
1925 - In my diary 1890 I wrote I have staked all on the essential goodness of human nature. But now 35 years later I have discovered how permanent are the evil instincts and impulses within us and how little they seem to change - like greed for wealth and power and how mere social machinery will never change that. We ask better things from human nature but we never get a response. No amount of science or knowledge has been of any avail. And unless we curb the bad impulse how will we get better social institutions?
Every form of government, every family, every religion is essentially wrestling with the existence of evil. Whether you know it or not - most of the major decisions of your life have been heavily influenced by your particular understanding of sin and evil and what you believe the remedy is.
That’s why you have taken your current job.
It’s why you live where you live.
It’s why you married your current spouse, or divorced your previous.
It’s why you are here today.
Our understanding of sin, it’s pervasiveness and it’s remedy touches every aspect of our lives.
Today’s text answers three questions:
Why is evil so pervasive?
What have we done to curb it?
What is the only method that will actually work?
So when you see a shooting like we saw in Virginia, “It’s not the sinful depraved person, it’s the gun that’s the problem”.
Well we see in our text today that the heart of the problem is a problem of the heart.
And we see there is only one way to extract the poison.
Why is Evil So Pervasive?
