For thousands of years, God spoke to His prophets and gave them clues about the identity of the coming King who would save them.

In the story of Jesus' birth, we can see a lot of pictures and examples of how we need to wait for God's promises. Do you have a promise from God that you are waiting to see fulfilled?

EQUIP: God's promises arrive!

Teaching Point 1: Redemption came to Earth as a Baby (Luke 2:8-14).

Israel's history is filled with great heroes and deliverers like Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, and David. These people did amazing things for their nation and won dramatic victories, and Israel expected that the coming Messiah would be the same kind of hero.

Under the oppressive rule of the Roman Empire, all of Israel was expecting a full-blown, heavenly warrior-king to enter the scene and save them from tyranny.

Imagine the shepherds' surprise when they saw this promised King in person - a helpless Baby clothed in rags, asleep in a barn on top of a food bin.

Angels declared that Jesus is the Savior, the Messiah, and the Lord. ''I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior - yes, the Messiah, the Lord - has been born today'' (LUKE 2:10-11).

Despite all the expectations, God's ultimate promise to send a Savior-King is fulfilled with the birth of an Infant.

The people did not interpret the prophecies correctly and were looking for a different kind of kingdom and a different kind of king. They were expecting an anointed King who ruled the whole world and would wage war against the idol-worshipping Gentiles and destroy the sinners (JOHN 6:14-15).
