Good morning. We're taking the summer to walk through the book of Ecclesiastes, which was most likely written by King Solomon of Israel. You and I might dream and fantasize about how life might be if we were independently wealthy…or if we had an elite education…or a man might dream about having an unlimited supply of beautiful, willing women at his command. Imagine if life were like that! Solomon didn't have to imagine. His life was like that. And yet…despite having the wealth of Bill Gates, the lifestyle of Hugh Heffner, and the education of the smartest Ivy League graduate…Solomon had reached a point in life where he felt empty and restless. So Ecclesiastes is basically Solomon's personal journal, written at this time in his life when he was searching for something that could give him meaning and happiness.

You've met our mascot, right? This is Solomon the Goldfish. Think about his life for a minute: he has the glass walls of his bowl. He has the water all around him. He has the food that shows up every once in a while. And that's pretty much it-his world is limited to what's inside his bowl. And we're using this to symbolize the approach that King Solomon took in his search for meaning. Over and over in Ecclesiastes, he says, ''I'm trying to figure out life under the sun. In other words, I'm intentionally limiting the scope of my search to things I can observe and understand with my own mind, without any outside, supernatural element.''

So starting today, and for the next five messages, Solomon is going to focus in on five different things that he's noticed in the world, that could serve as clues about the meaning of life.
