Outsiders 3 - Back Story

Introduction: A new preacher at the local church walked into the auditorium of His new church. He thought it would be best to move the piano from the right side of the stage to the left side of the stage, so he moved it. Soon after he was fired for the disruption caused by the new placement of the piano. Five years later he returned to the same church to visit with the minister who stepped in when he was fired. They walked into the auditorium and there was the piano on the left side of the stage. The once fired preacher asked ''How did you get the piano to the left side of the stage? They fired me for moving it.'' The reply from the other minister was plain. ''I came in every day and moved the piano to the left three inches.''

Change takes time. It progresses slowly. How did the modern church go from being an insider in relation to American culture, society and politics to being an outsider? It took time. What I want to do over the next two Sundays in this sermon series is go through a historical overview of the ideas that created Western Civilization so that we will see and understand how we got to where we are today. I Chronicles 12:32 describes the men of Issachar as those, ''who understood the times and knew what Israel should do.'' We need to understand our times in order to know what we should do today.

Proverbs 23:7 ''For as he thinks within himself, so is he.''

There is a flow to history and culture. This flow is rooted and has its wellspring in the thoughts of people. What we are in our thought-life determines how we act. This is true of our corporate actions, such as political decisions, and it is true of our personal lives. We all have presuppositions, and we will live more consistently on the basis of these presuppositions than even we ourselves sometimes realize.
