"This is He who came by water and blood - Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood." Now water there is a reference to the Word of God, the written Word of God. We studied, not long ago, the Word of God in this particular series, the importance of the Word of God, the accuracy of the Word of God. We said that the Bible is God's revelation of Himself to man. You cannot separate the living Word of God, Jesus, from the written Word of God, the Bible. They are one and the same. Some try to separate one from the other. Some try to say, "Well, it's Christ by which we should judge all things." Others would say, "It's the Bible by which we should judge all things." Well it's impossible to separate the two. The written Word is an expression of the Living Word. The Living Word is a fulfilment of the written Word. Jesus is the Living Word of God. Jesus came to us by water, that is, by the Word of God. But not only by water, He came to us by blood for He was flesh and blood. Then he says "And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth." So, the Holy Spirit operates in revealing truth, in showing us truth. We take the written Word of God, the Bible and how do we understand it? We cannot understand it from it being revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. So these three bear witness - Jesus by the Word, by the blood and by the Holy Spirit. "For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit."
You may say, "Now wait a minute, I thought it was the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit." Well, the Son is the Word. Jesus Christ is the Word, the Living Word. He said "these three are one." Not three witnesses, but one witness in three persons; the Father, the Word, or Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. "And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water," that is, ...
