Colossians 3:22-4:1

The Puritans believed there were two callings of God - a general calling and a particular calling. The general calling is the same call for everyone and is a call to salvation and godliness.

The particular calling is the specific occupation that God calls a person to do to earn a living and support their family. They believed in two basic principles about work:

1. Since God is the one who calls people to their work, the worker becomes a steward who serves God. Thomas Manton wrote, ''Everyone is God's servant and has his work to do to glorify God; some in one calling, some in another.''

2. Because God calls everyone to their work he dignifies all different kinds of work. William Tyndale wrote, ''There is a difference between washing dishes and preaching the Word of God; but as pleasing God, there is no difference.''

They believed all of life belonged to God so no matter what you did you were to do it to honor him. They did not divide life into sacred and secular. All of life belonged to God and they wanted to honor him in their work as well as their worship.

Background Slavery was universally accepted in ancient times. More than half of the people in the Roman Empire were slaves which included 'professional' people such as teachers and doctors as well as craftsmen and those who did menial or hard labor.

Slaves were people with no rights, who existed only for the comfort and convenience of their owners. As a result of their status the temptation was to do just enough to please their master, because nothing they did would change their situation in life.

Paul gave a basic principle that everything a Christian does is to be done to the glory of God (:17). Now he applies that to our work. CHRISTIAN WORKER :22-25 Sincere obedience :22 Obey - Gk. to submit to the authority of another (:20 children).
