We are going to think about the doctrine of man. This scripture quotes Psalms 8.

(Read Hebrews 2:5-9)

Long ago a shepherd boy named David, watching over his father's flock, lay on a grassy-bedded night. He looked up and saw the starry sky. He came to realize, as God the Holy Spirit spoke to his young teenage heart, that this was a vast universe. As he considered a God who could hang the stars in space, a God who could put stars in space that would shine for centuries of time, David realized that he in comparison was just a small part of God's great plan for this great universe. David, contemplating the mightiness of God, the power of God, the greatness of God in creating all the universe, said, "God, why do you care about me? Why would a God who is so powerful and so great and so mighty care about me? Why would a great God care about puny man? Why would he even be concerned about man, or why would He visit mankind?" Because David felt so insignificant when he compared himself to the great universe.

Surely if David could understand that in the day in which he lived in the Old Testament time, you and I, who have the benefit of all of the space shuttles and man's visit to the moon can certainly understand how David felt. When the Apollo astronauts went to the moon, they left upon the moon a sealed capsule that I trust is there now. In the sealed capsule is Psalm 8, which says, "What is man, that thou art mindful of him?" Little David began to write. He said, "When I consider the moon, the work of thy fingers," he never dreamed that his words would one day be upon that moon that he could see overhead. So the question comes to philosophers, it comes to teachers, it comes to preachers, it comes to the great thinkers alike. That question is, "What is man that thou art mindful of him?"
