Commitment: An Effective Tool for Leadership

Judges 7:1-19
We've talked about in these Wednesday nights several traits of leadership that we want in the leaders here at San Jacinto. We talked about faithfulness and the importance of that. We went on and talked about teamwork. We talked about unity. We talked about commitment and all of those things. Well, we're going to talk about commitment tonight. These are simple things, but things we need to remember are important. We are not alone serving the Lord. We are part of a team of the San Jacinto Family. God has called each of us to this ministry and this work.
Take your Bibles and turn to Judges Chapter 7; the book of Judges Chapter 7. We'll begin in verse one. This afternoon the Theodore Roosevelt, a tremendous aircraft carrier, with its crew and with all the equipment aboard steamed out of the harbor bound for the Mediterranean Sea. 25,000 Marines and special forces were called into service for a special mission. The Secretary of Defense asked for authorization for 100 warplanes to be put in service somewhere in an undisclosed location in the Persian Gulf. We are in a time of war in America.
That's exactly what this passage is about. That's where Israel was. In fact, not only were they in a war, but they were fighting an enemy that was stronger, better equipped, more experienced than they in battle. The enemy was called the Midianites, the mortal enemies of the nation of Israel. Now, the Midianites were a spiritual picture of what? They are a picture of the world, the flesh and the devil. The things that take us away from commitment, the things that would siphon our energies are the world, the flesh and the devil. They can be evil things or good things used in a way that our priorities are misspent. And so, God raised up a man named Gideon. He learned some wonderful things about commitment, about warfare.
