Characteristics Of A Child Of God

You're going to that place one day to be with the Lord Jesus, and that place He's prepared for us. But in the meantime we need to know how to live in this world, amen, and how to live as children of God. I want to take up the theme that I shared this morning about how to know that you're saved and how to know that you can't lose it. And I want to talk tonight about characteristics of children of God. I want you to turn to I John 5. And someone might say, "Well, how do I know that I am saved? I know that if I am saved, I'm saved eternally. But what are some of the ways I can know that I am a child of God?" Well, the Bible doesn't leave us in the dark about that; the Bible gives us some very definite ways that we can look at characteristics and see whether or not we have these characteristics of a child of God. And they ought to be true of you if you're a Christian tonight, so I hope you'll take note. I'm going to talk about three general areas in which we can test, we can measure ourselves, we can examine ourselves and see if we have these characteristics and have a real peace because of that.
I John 5:1: "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him." That is, if you love the Father, you also love the children of the Father. If you love the Father, then you love the family. The Father is the one who caused our new birth by sending the Holy Spirit to convict us, sending Jesus to die for us. And the Bible says that we are born not of the will of man, the will of the flesh, but we're born by the will of God. Then verse 2: "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous." It means they're not burdensome. "For whatsoever is born of God overco ...
