Dethronement (9 of 16)
Series: Acts
Dave Gustavsen
Acts 12:1-24
Open to Acts 12.
This year, Forbes magazine did their first ever ranking of the world's most powerful people. And they listed the 67 most powerful people in the world…and I'm going to share with you the top 5. You ready?
Who do you think they rated the number one most powerful person in the world?
President Barack Obama. By a wide margin, they said he has the most power and influence in the world today.
Number two was Hu Jintao, the president of China.
Number three was Vladimir Putin, president of Russia. And he's also a very manly guy, who rides horses with no shirt on. Don't you love that?
Number four is Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve. When he speaks, people pay attention.
And the fifth most powerful person in the world, according to Forbes, is actually two guys-it's Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Anybody know who these guys are? They're the founders of Google. Definitely lots of influence over lots of people.
And Forbes said the reason these guys are on the top of the list is four things: they influence lots of people; they control large sums of money; they have influence in multiple spheres-not just in one area; and they actively use their power.
And I'm not going to tell you the other 62-you have to go look it up!
But power is a really interesting thing, isn't it? I would guess that most of us probably wouldn't care to be on this list-right? I mean, maybe a few of you would love to have that kind of power-but not most of us. But, if you're really honest, you would admit that you would like to have at least a little power. Some influence, some money. We certainly don't want to feel like we're powerless, right? So it's a tricky thing.
And if we believe that Jesus is the real deal, and he's really the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and he defines life for us…the question is: What does Jesus have to say about power?
