1 Timothy 5:1-16
One of the things that strengthens my faith, and reminds me why I’m a Christian, is the history of the early church. When you look at that little group of Jesus followers, and when you realize how little education they had, and how little political capital they had, and how little wealth they had…and then you see how rapidly this movement spread across the Roman Empire, it’s just incredible. In one of his writings, he says, ''Not only do Christians take care of their own poor-they take care of outsiders. They’re doing what we’re supposed to do!'' So here was this Emperor saying, ''The state is supposed to take care of these people…and these Christians are showing us up!''
And that was one of the things that just grabbed people’s attention, and made people think that this new movement was the real thing.
