1 Timothy 6:11-21
Okay…back in early November we started reading a letter that Paul the Apostle wrote to a young pastor named Timothy. And these guys had spent a lot of time together, but now Paul had moved on, and he had left Timothy in charge of this church in Ephesus. So Paul wrote this letter to Timothy to remind him how church is supposed to work. Jesus said, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. So this movement that Timothy was a part of, and that we're a part of, is supernatural. Humans didn't invent this! Jesus did! And he promised that it cannot be stopped.
I love that passage in the book of Acts-it's shortly after Jesus has left this earth. And the church was just this tiny little movement in the midst of the powerful Roman Empire. But there was a boldness and a courage to these Christians that was really hard to explain. And there's a scene in Acts chapter five where Peter and some other guys are out in public, sharing the gospel, and they get arrested, and they get dragged before the religious authorities. And the authorities are trying to figure out how to punish these guys. And there's this old, wise Jewish man named Gamaliel, who stands up. And he says, ''Here's my advice. Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.''
And his words were so prophetic! Because for about 2,000 years now, people have tried to stop the church-sometimes with military force; sometimes with political policies; sometimes with intellectual intimidation, right? College professors telling their freshman students that if you're a Christian, it's time to grow up and stop believing fairy tails! It's time to get enlightened! And yet, every time people try to push the church down, it just ...
