Proverbs 31:10
This Mother's day I want us to look at one of the most familiar chapters in God's Word.
To begin with let's look at an Overview of Proverbs 31:
It is a Poem - Poems are literary vehicles of carrying deep truths in a simple container. So when you read a poem you should expect it to often be saying more than is apparent.
The Author, according to verse 1, is the Mother of Lemuel - We will talk more about her in a moment.
The Audience is Lemuel - He is a young man who might one day become King. He is probably a teen or late pre teen at the time this is written.
It is an Acrostic - Acrostics are memory aids. So whatever this is, it was meant to be memorize by Lemuel.
It is a Chiasmus - That is it builds to a main idea, then it declines from that idea according to the same pattern. The Main Idea is this woman is of GREAT value to her Husband.
Proverbs 31:10-31 (ESV)
10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
This is a very rare woman. Most of the girls at school will not be like this woman. Most of the girls in the Youth Group may not be like this woman. Parents, would your sons recognize this woman if he met her? Does he have discernment?
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.
Young ladies this woman has the deep respect of her husband. He trusts her. He does NOT look down on her as an underling. Young men, don't marry a woman you can't respect, that you don't admire beyond appearances.
12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.
She is clearing on HIS team. Ladies, men are adversarial by nature. We are taught form our youngest days that there is our team, and there is THE ENEMY. Girls aren't that way:
ILLUSTRATION: I coach my 7 year old daughter's soccer team and I coach my 11 year old boys soccer team. They are VERY different. If a girl accidentally trips someone on the other team she stop ...
