"For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified." I Corinthians 2:2 (KJV)
"And as Moses held up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up." John 3:14 (KJV)
"And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived." Numbers 21:9 (KJV)
I. THE UPLIFTED CROSS WAS NECESSARY BECAUSE OF MAN'S SINFUL REBELLION
And the people spake against God, and against Moses, "Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread" Numbers 21:5 (KJV)
A. The people (doubled) God's promise.
"wherefore have ye brought us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness...
Insight: God promised them a good life - not a miserable death.
B. The people ...(denounced) God's provision.
"our souls loatheth this light bread . . "
Insight: The manna from heaven symbolized Christ who alone can satisfy the needs of our hearts.
C. The people (despised) God's prophet.
"the people spake against God and against Moses. . .
Insight: They rebelled against God's truth and believed the devil's lie - that God was not a god but God.
II. THE UPLIFTED CROSS WAS NECESSARY BECAUSE OF GOD'S SURE RETRIBUTION
And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. Numbers 21:6 (KJV)

Insight: The holiness of God demands sin's punishment; the love of God provides escape for the sinner.
