AUTHORSHIP: The Apostle John
DATE: Between. AD 85 and 95 when John was a very elderly man
PURPOSE OF WRITING: John gave his reasons for writing at several points in 1 John (1 :4; 2:1,7 and 8, 12-14, 21, 26; 5:13)
THEMES: Various themes run throughout his letter. John gives four major themes: that we may enjoy fellowship with God and His Son (1:3); that his joy might be full (1:4); that we may not sin (2:1); that we may know for sure that we have eternal life (5:13). of this is given in the backdrop that apostasy or falling away from faith had already become a problem in the early church and John writes to exhort believers in light of the second coming of Christ. Whereas Paul's characteristic words are faith, hope and love, John's are light, life and love.
