AUTHORSHIP: The Apostle Paul

RECIPIENT: Timothy - Timothy was the son of a Gentile father and a Jewish mother (Acts 16:1,3). He was reared in a knowledge of the Scriptures (2 Tim. 1:5, 3:14-15), and led to the Lord possibly by Paul himself (1 Tim. 1:2). On his second missionary journey Paul found Timothy at Lystra. Paul determined to take Timothy along as a member of the missionary party and Timothy subsequently became one of Paul’s closest companions. From the various references in the New Testament, Timothy appears as a tactful young man of a nervous temperament and a degree of physical weakness. He was a faithful and conscientious worker, very dear to the Apostle Paul. Paul called him ‘‘man of God,’’ a high tribute indeed.

THEME OF FIRST TIMOTHY: Paul’s first letter to Timothy contains practical advice for a young Christian worker faced with problems in the local church and conscious of his own personal limitations. Paul was most concerned that Timothy take a firm stand against false doctrine. Paul challenged Timothy as to the vitality and scope of prayer and set forth the qualifications of elders and deacons. In all things Timothy was to be an example and not allow his youth to be a hindrance to him. Paul also spoke of the coming apostasy briefly describing conditions during the last days. Paul also gave instruction concerning the responsibility of church members to love one another, to support the widows, and that servants were to discharge their duties to their master faithfully. In conclusion he warned about the ‘‘love of money’’ and encouraged those who were rich to invest ...
