Introduction: We have today what is called the charismatic movement. Often someone will say about an individual or church, they are charismatic. There is a sense in which every person who is saved is charsmatic. The word charismatic comes from two Greek words, Charis which means grace, and Mata which means gift. So a charismatic gift is a grace gift. These gifts are referred to in scripture as spiritual gifts. Every believer has at least one spiritual gift. It is important for believers to know what their spiritual gifts are and how God wants to use them to build up the body of Christ, the church.
A spiritual gift can be defined as follows: "A supernatural endowment of motivation and ability for effective Christian service." Spiritual gifts are special God given abilities given by the Lord to accomplish his word. They are to be distinguished from material gifts or from natural talents.
1. THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ARE SPIRITUAL GIFTS
A. They are not talents.
B. They are not natural abilities.
C. They root in the grace of God, not in the merit and works of man.
II. THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ARE SERVICE GIFTS - verse 7
A. The manifestation of the spirit is given for every man for the common good.
B. Spiritual gifts are not primarily for personal edification.
C. Spiritual gifts are a stewardship - to be invested for the common good for the church.
D. Gifts are for employment and not just for enjoyment.
