Colossians 1:24-29

Frances Havergal was born in England in 1836. Her father was a pastor and skilful composer of music. She became a brilliant singer and piano-player and a glittering career in society was open before her. But she considered her talents to be loans from the Lord, to be used in his service. She would not even sing, except sacred music and for the purpose of winning souls.

She is best known for two hymns which she wrote:

1. Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to Thee (1874).
2. Like a river glorious is God's perfect peace (1876).

She was often sick and not in good health. Referring to her pain-ridden body, she said, ''Everbody is so sorry for me except myself.'' Then she added, ''I see my pain in the light of Calvary.'' She accepted her poor health as a way of serving the Lord.

Her life was cut short when she died at the age of 43 from an abdominal infection. On her tombstone her family had her favorite verse engraved as she had wished from I John 1:7 The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

No one likes to suffer because suffering causes us physical pain. But believers should be willing to suffer for their faith in Christ because he suffered so they could be forgiven of their sins.

Some 700 years before Christ died Isaiah described his suffering. Isaiah 53:5 He was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.

Puritan Joseph Church wrote, ''Sufferings are but little chips of the cross.'' When we suffer because we are a Christian we identify with Christ who suffered emotionally, physically and spiritually.
