Are you born gay?
In April of 1997, Ellen DeGeneres, the lead character of ABC's Sitcom Series Ellen, became the first openly gay lead character in television. I don't know if you remember the episode. Many of you don't remember the episode because there was so much backlash in the Birmingham market that the ABC affiliate did not even air the show that night. We liberals up in Huntsville did air the show, but it was big news across the whole country that there was an openly gay woman playing an openly gay woman in a TV Sitcom.
That was 1997, 16 years ago. And today it is very clear that the cultural landscape has totally changed.
That was evident this week when on Monday Sports Illustrated celebrated Jason Collins as the first openly gay athlete playing a major American Team Sport. I mean, it is one thing when quirky sitcom stars come out of the closet, but when an NBA star comes out it something else.
You may have seen that an ESPN commentator, Christ Broussard, explained the traditional Christian position on homosexuality, and that it was a sin, and not God's plan. He, the Christian, was ridiculed for making these claims, and his employer ESPN felt compelled to apologize on Broussard's behalf.
You may remember this past Easter outspoken Christian Tim Tebow was asked to preach at the Historic First Baptist Dallas but later declined the invitation, not wanting to be associated with the pastor of that church who had previously made comments condemning homosexuality.
In January it was big news that Louie Giglio, the founder of the Passion movement, was asked to withdraw from delivering the inaugural prayer at President Obama's second inaugural because he had condemned homosexuality in a sermon he preached 15 years ago.
And even right now the Supreme Court is contemplating two major decisions ...
