''You shall have no other gods before Me.''

The first message in a series of ten sermons on the Ten Commandments.

A husband and wife were discussing the possibility of taking a trip to the holy land. The husband said to his wife, ''wouldn't it be great to visit the holy land and stand on Mount Sinai and read the Ten Commandments?'' His wife replied, ''It would be even better if we stayed home and kept them!''

Morals today, even among many Christians, have drastically declined. For many people, the Ten Commandments have become the Ten Suggestions. The moral decline hasn't happened over night; it's been steadily trending downward for some time now. The results of a 2013 study commissioned by the American Bible Society revealed that 77% of Americans believe that morals have declined. And the reason for the decline? The lack of Bible reading. However, the study also revealed a disconnect between our beliefs and practice. While 66% of people surveyed believed that the Bible contained everything a person needed to live morally, over half of respondents did not want the advice that the Bible offered and read the Bible rarely, less than 4-5 times per year.

The result of the disconnect between belief and action as it relates to the Bible has led to the notion that morals are relative, everything is subjective, there are no moral absolutes. Ernest Hemingway once wrote: ''What is moral is what you feel good after and what is wrong what you feel bad after.'' Does this sound familiar? If it feels good, if I enjoy it, if it works for me, it must be good and right.

But moral relativism is an inadequate guide for living. That kind of thinking and practice produces an environment of moral chaos similar to the how the Bible describes the time in Israel when they had no king and ''every man did what was right in his own eyes'' (Judges 21:25).
