David's Prayer of Thanksgiving
Rex Yancey
1 Chronicles 29:10-13
King David fully intended to build a house for God. He thought it would be a good place to house the Ark of the Covenant and be a centralized place of worship for Israel and Judah that would bring them together. But God told him he would not build Him a house because he had been a man of war and had blood on his hands.
So David switched gears and started collecting offerings and gathering materials so his son Solomon could build the temple. Money started pouring in. This generosity prompted David to pray this public prayer. He acknowledged God as the sovereign God of the universe. He can do what He wants to do when he wants to do it.
Robert Smith is a professor at Beeson Seminary, on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham. He wrote a book entitled Doctrines that Dance. He said churches today are suffering because they are feeding on sermonic snacks instead of the doctrines that dance. He said many sermons are flesh without bones. So let's think about the sovereignty of God as we study this experience in the life of David.
SINCE GOD IS SOVEREIGN MY PLANS HAVE A LIMIT.
Proverbs 16:9 says, ''A man's heart devises his ways but the Lord directs his steps.''
David had a GOOD idea to build God a house. The Ark of the Covenant had survived in tents. It was a good idea to build the ark a permanent dwelling place. It was a good idea to bring the divided kingdom together. However, our good ideas are not always godly ideas.
In 1965 I felt the call of God on my life to preach the gospel. However, I made an attempt to join the Marine Corp. I tried twice and failed my physical both times. It was my idea, not God's idea. Had God not cancelled my plan, I could be dead today or handicapped. There is no telling what I might have done with my life.
