Mark 2:1-12

One of my mom's favorite songs was an old Rusty Goodman gospel song entitled, "Who Am I?" It was sung at her funeral. Somehow my mom understood the magnitude of God and thus the magnitude of God's love for her. From the first time she heard those words, she was drawn to the truth of God's amazing love for us. The chorus: "Who am I that a King would bleed and die for? Who am I that he would pray, "Not my will, Thine Lord." The answer I may never know why He ever loved me so that to an old rugged cross He'd go for "Who am I?" Candidly, the truth that Jesus, Son of God, died for me should be the most humbling and breath-taking truths of all.

Arriving at Chapter 2, there are so many ways to preach this text that a preacher must simple ask God for the right way at a particular time. This morning I want to ask the question, "Who I am" in a little different manner.

Picture in mind's eye this house where Jesus is preaching. Obviously, the healed leper had told everyone because there is standing room only. Now, there's a skirmish outside as 4 men try to get in. Things get quiet outside then it sounds like someone is tearing the roof of off the house when suddenly the sunlight shines through and the next sight you see is that of a pallet with a man (disable) being lowered toward Jesus.

In this house we can identify a number of different 'groups' of people. Let's identify some of these groups. As we call them by name, I am asking you to consider which group would you have been in. What group do you belong to?

1) THE CROWD - (v.1-2). We read that it is indeed standing room only, but who are these people and why are they here? I suggest that this is the group that heard about the events in the synagogue and at Peter's house (I.E exorcism, healing, miracles and more) and they have come to see the show.
