This story is not one of the disciple's finest moments. It almost sounds like a Baptist church. A couple of brothers in the small group decide that they want (probably deserve) to be Jesus' #1 and #2 men in the Kingdom. So they gather up their courage (and Matthew suggests that they took their mom with them to plead their case. Why? Because Salome, their mom, was arguably the sister of Jesus' mom - so Aunt Salome might have been a family weapon to get their way) and ask Jesus for this favor.

Personally, I see some similarities in the way that the brothers approached Jesus and the way that the Rich Young Ruler had just approached him. While the rich man's tactics (I.E. running, bowing, and saying ''Good teacher'') were a little different, the brothers ask Jesus to say that He would give them 'whatever' they ask - so in fact, both of these approaches to Jesus possessed hooks to try to sway the Lord.

When we attempt to use our wilds on the Lord, it has a way of backfiring and teaches us.

1. The Pride Which Tempts Us - Of all the things which our Lord seems to hate, it is pride. His Holy word bears witness of this truth. In Proverbs 6:16 we are told of the ''Six things that the Lord hates'' and leading the list is 'a proud look.' Proverbs 21:4 says, ''An high look, a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.'' And I submit that James, the Half-brother of Jesus, put the final nail in this coffin when he wrote, ''The Lord resists (stiff-arms) the proud.'' I further submit to you that the reason pride is so often mentioned in God's word is that pride is a disease which infects and infests we humans. The signs, symptoms, and results are devastating.
