Mark 12:1-12
The smart phone has changed many things. In days past, somewhere in the living room of the most family houses, you could find a big book laying on the coffee table. If you open that book there were snapshots, photos, and even Polaroids of the family. We call this the family photo album. We had one, quite likely you had one, and 30 years ago most of the families I visited had them. It was just a common book.
However, with the advent of the smart phone, photos are kept on a phone, an iPad, or even a computer. With a flick of a finger, parents and grandparents can show you ore of their family then you want to see. Additionally, we are posting pictures on social media. For those, social media is the place where their lives and families are being chronicled for all to see.
One of the real interesting things about this change in shared information, is that some pictures are getting seen which we had rather have remained private. Today it's possible to snap somebody's picture, posted on the Internet, and they never know until they see it. This sounds a little bit frighteningand certainly startling.
With that thought and concept in mind let's take a look at our text and see what startling and frightening photos Jesus reveals. (Read Text)
Most of us know that a simple definition of a parable is "an earthly story with a heavenly meaning." Our parable today is told in the context of a very stressful situation. Jesus has just challenged the authority of the Sanhedrin and while still talking to them, tells the story which is directed at them. Verse 12 is evidence that the Sanhedrin knew Jesus was talking to them.
The pictures that He paints here are startling. It's like the picture that someone takes of you that you don't want taken, and they posted on the Internet. See in our text six pictures.
