Reverend: Alright, if you’ll pull out your outlines in your Bibles, next week we’ll finish the series, but we’re going to look again at why Jesus hates religion and we’re going to look at contract love versus covenant love.
Now one of the things that we’ve seen as we’ve done this series is that Jesus hates religion and one of the reasons is because religions all lead to the same place. People say today all religions lead to God. Is that true? That is not true. Is it true that all religions lead to the same place? Yes, it is. They all lead to a moralistic mindset. Do you perform for God? God loves you and accepts you and therefore he blesses you. It’s about your obedience, it’s about your performance, it’s about you making yourself righteous and it gives you some formula. It causes you to misread the Bible and you see the Bible as a book of rules.
And it leads to a contract mentality. And we understand contracts. Probably every person here has been in some kind of contract, signed a contract. And contracts have great components to it and they work in life. They’re legal agreements and they’re legal agreements that help us, you know, do all sorts of good things. They help us by these clarified agreements, you know, and helps you with deals. And it summarizes an understanding between two people. It says okay, here’s what we’re agreeing to and I know that you want to be honest and I want you to have integrity so we’ll agree that you’re gonna, you know, act this way.
And you want to act as a person with honesty and integrity and it’s a way of controlling a situation because the one thing we know about the future is that it’s going to be different than what we anticipate. And so we agree together at a point of time before we know the way that we’re going to act and what things are going to do or how we’re going to act in that situation, a contract.
